For other meanings, see the disambiguation page Robin.

Robin was originally a diminutive of Robert, derived from Rob and the diminutive Old French suffix -in. It is nowadays used as an independent name. The alternative spellings Robyn and Robbin are sometimes used. In the United Kingdom it is generally regarded as a male name, although it is sometimes given to females. In the U.S., it is more popular as a female name than a male one -- during the 1990s, for example, it was the 325th most popular name given to girls and the 693rd most popular given to boys [1].
