Robert Waltrip

Robert L. Waltrip, a licensed funeral director, is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Service Corporation International, with which he has worked for 40 years. Mr. Waltrip grew up in his family's funeral business. He began to manage the business in the 1950's. In the 1960's, Mr. Waltrip began buying funeral homes in order to expand the business. He pioneered the "cluster" strategy of resource pooling among multiple locations. The cluster strategy, which involves utilizing a single limousine and flower service, for example, to provide services to various funeral service locations, enabled the company to realize significant cost efficiencies. Today, SCI consists of a network of more than 1,200 funeral homes and 400 cemeteries in the United States and Canada. Mr. Waltrip holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Houston.
