Robert Rayne

Robert Needell Rayne (1913-2000) was born in Kenya. He graduated from Oxford University, majoring in Greek Literature and Latin Literature and finished his Masters course at the same university.

Rayne served as a bomber pilot with the Royal Air Force during World War II, and was for some time a prisoner of war in Germany. Since 1950 he took an active part in establishing and developing the University of Keele where he served as a lecturer in classics. Mr. Rayne and his family were active members of the Church of England.

A former teacher at Manchester Grammar School, he was a deeply respected early warden of Horwood, with a kind and tolerant disposition. He was also active in the early days of the Chapel, and helped to establish the soccer club.

On 15 February 1963, Rayne, his wife, and his daughter left England for Chung Chi College, Hong Kong. Rayne took over the Vice-Presidency of the college, a position left vacant by the retirement of Dr. Leslie G. Kilborn in 1963. On 1st August 1975, he was promoted to the President of Chung Chi College. On 31 July 1976 he retired and lived in England until his death on 17 January 2000.

In 1968, Rayne, together with Prof. S. Y. Hu of Chung Chi College, Father H. Naylor of Yah Yan College and seven other people, co-founded the Conservancy Association, the first environmental organization in Hong Kong, and became the chairman of the Association in its early years.
