Robert Downey Sr. (born Robert John Elias Jr. in 1937) is an actor, writer and director. He served in the Army, played minor league baseball, was a Golden Gloves champion and off-off Broadway playwright, all before he was 22-years-old. In 1960, he began writing and directing basement-budgeted, absurdist films which gained an underground following.He is best known as the director and writer of the cult classic feature film, 'Putney Swope', a biting satire on the New York Madison Avenue advertising world and was his first film to receive a major release by Don Rugoff. Father of actor/former Saturday Night Live castmember Robert Downey Jr. and brother of SNL writer/feature player Jim Downey.
He has appeared on twice on the Tonight Show, Dick Cavett, IFC’s “At the Angelika”, Sundance Channel and countless other TV and radio shows. In addition, Downey has been a guest speaker at film festivals and universities throughout the country. He lives in New York City with his wife, Rosemary Rogers.
