Robert Arbuthnot of Haddo

Robert Arbuthnot of Haddo-Rattray (baptized 24 October 1728–5 November 1803) was a noted Scotsman. Third and only surviving son of Robert Arbuthnot, 1st of Haddo-Rattray. He married 1759 Mary Urquhart who had been brought up at Craigston Castle. They had issue.
For some time a merchant in Peterhead, he removed to Edinburgh as a banker. He sold the Peterhead property to James Arbuthnot of Dens in 1768. In 1772 he sold Haddo to Alexander Farquharson. Before 1772 Robert suffered heavy losses through the failure of the firm, Arbuthnot-Guthrie. He was for many years, and until his death, Secretary of the Board of Trustees for the Encouragement of the Manufactures and Fisheries of Scotland in which he was succeeded by his son Sir William Arbuthnot, 1st Bt. He was instrumental in obtaining the chair of Moral Philosophy for his intimate friend, Dr James Beattie.
