Robert Alan Shields, Jr., [1] was a convicted murderer who was executed on August 23, 2005, in the state of Texas for the murder of Paula Stiner [2] on September 21, 1994.

On the day of the murder, Shields broke into the house of Paula and Tracy Steiner and ransacked it. When Mrs. Steiner returned home, Shields stabbed her to death and stole her credit cards, checkbook, keys, and car. Tracy Steiner, the victim's husband, found his wife's body about an hour after the murder. Shields used one of the victim's credit cards and was later caught driving her car. DNA evidence was instrumental in his conviction.

Shields argued on his appeal that he had ineffective counsel. He also maintained that, although he was in the victim’s home, he was not the actual killer. [3][4][5]

Robert Shields played a significant role in public awareness regarding the death penalty. Along with his contributions to the Uncensored from Texas Death Row[6][7] articles, he wrote a letter to Texas Governor Rick Perry [8] inviting [9] him to witness his execution [10] with help from the Canadian Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty [11].

Robert Shields declined to make a final statement [12] prior to his execution.
