Robert

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The name Robert means "power" and/or "fame", and derives from:

  • Proto-Germanic hrôdberxtas
  • Old English hrodberht
  • Modern English Robert

The name may be shortened to the nicknames Robby, Robbie, Rabbie, Robban (in Sweden), Bob, Bobby, Bert, Rob and Robet (pronounced Row-bay). The Dutch form is Robbert, the Low Saxon name is Röpke. The latinized form of Robert was Rupertus, which is the origin of the name Rupert.

During the Second World War, the Italian form of the name, Roberto, briefly acquired a new meaning derived from and referring to "Roma-Berlino-Tokio" (the Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis).[1]
