Robbie Mustoe is best known for his time at Middlesbrough F.C., who he joined in 1990 from Oxford United F.C. for £375,000, making his home debut in a goalless draw against West Ham United F.C.. When new player-manager Bryan Robson took over at the club in 1994, Mustoe initially lost his place to his gaffer. However he worked his way back into the side, becoming a consistent starter, featuring in all three of the club's Wembley finals and sharing the Middlesborough Player of the Year with Hamilton Ricard in 1999.
When Steve McLaren took over at the club in 2001, Mustoe was 33 and clearly not part of McLaren's future plans. However he again worked his way back into the team and played a prominent part in the 2001-2002 season. He left the club in the summer of 2002, having made 351 appearances, including a record number of Premiership starts, scoring 16 goals.
He played a season at Charlton Athletic F.C. before ending his professional playing career in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday F.C.. Mustoe is currently the assistant coach for the Bentley College, Boston, MA Men's Soccer team.
In his book Woody and Nord, Gareth Southgate describes Mustoe as 'one of the most honest professionals in the game.'
