Roan Fel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Roan Fel is a fictional character in the Star Wars expanded universe, who makes his first appearance in the Dark Horse comic series Star Wars Legacy (130 Years ABY). He is the 'rightful' Emperor of the reformed Galactic Empire, and the third in the Fel dynasty to sit upon the Imperial throne, and is presumably a descendant of the famous Soontir Fel; an Imperial starfighter pilot during the Galactic Civil War. A highly intelligent man, Roan is renowned for his political acumen and strategic thinking, and is responsible for keeping the new Empire on the course his grandfather had set for it; one that envisioned peace, order and unity for the entire Galaxy and for all its sentients (Much in contrast to the first, xenophobic Galactic Empire beneath Emperor Palpatine).

Decades after the Yuuzhan Vong were defeated, and peace brought back to the Galaxy, the Imperial Remnant once more proclaimed itself as an Empire and began to grow in strength, this time, a more benign Emperor at its throne. A century afterwards (127 years ABY), with Roan Fel the new Emperor and the Imperial forces once more at a formidable strength, a new legion of Sith emerged from the barren world of Korriban, and the two formed an alliance. Together, they manufactured an incident which triggered a brutal war with the Galactic Alliance, and succeeded in reducing the Jedi numbers down to but a few. With the Galactic Alliance weakening, Roan Fel managed to re-take the former Imperial capital, Coruscant, and the Empire once again held its seat of power there. A mere three days later, a decisive battle on the planet of Ossus wiped away the last of the Jedi resistance to the Empire, scattering the Jedi Knights across the Galaxy. Emperor Fel was all too thankful to his Sith allies for their help in the war, and was prepared to give their leader, Darth Krayt, any reward he desired. In an act of selfishness and greed, the Sith Lord requested Fel's life as the reward, and proceeded to slay the Imperial Knights protecting him, before murdering the Emperor himself. Strangely, the doomed ruler made no attempt to protect himself, choosing not to draw his lightsabre to engage in a face-off with the traitorous Sith Lord, despite being a fully trained and capable Knight himself. In the chaos, Grand Admiral Morlish Veed had ordered the surrounding troops to stand down, and allow the Sith to murder the Emperor, having known about the intended betrayal, and becoming part of it himself.

However, somehow anticipating Veed's and Krayt's betrayal, Roan Fel had made a clone of himself, and had had it placed on the throne on Coruscant to meet with Darth Krayt in his place, while in the meantime, fled with his most trusted legions; with even the Moff council unaware that he had escaped. Darth Krayt had seen through the deception, and was aware that the being he had killed was no more than an imposter, but had decided to keep the information quiet from the Moff council. However, it would not be long before the now rogue leader made his presence known. Despite his action, he had not forseen the impact that the Sith would have on his family, the Empire, and the Galaxy, and as a result, was unable to prepare for what was to come. At that moment on Coruscant, the Empire would be split in two; with those loyal to the throne, no matter its leader, on one side, and those loyal to the rightful Emperor on the other. Initially, Emperor Fel's forces were small in number, and he and his military was forced to seek refuge away from the tyrannical, and powerful rule of Emperor Krayt. At first, only guerilla tactics were able to secure any measure of victory for the grossly outnumbered Roan's forces, and slowly, more legions defected from Krayt's rule to join the rightful Emperor's side.

Seven years later, in a bold move, Fel moved his fleet into the orbit of the Imperial world of Bastion, the most heavily defended planet in the history of the Galaxy, and landed on the surface, to be greeted by ranks of stormtroopers. Over the years, masses of Imperial forces had continued to bolster their presence there, most eagerly awaiting the return of the rightful Emperor. Upon disembarkment, an officer loyal to the holder of the Imperial throne, Darth Krayt, attempted to arrest Fel. In what was an unexpected move for the poor officer, the entire legion of stormtroopers immediately bowed down to the rightful Emperor, refusing to serve the throne. Unfaltered, the now lone officer drew his blaster with the intention of killing the usurped Emperor, but was immediately gunned down by a Fel loyalist. With Bastion under the control of Fel, his faction had finally secured a strong foothold in the Galaxy with which he would be able to launch a far more effective attack against the treacherous Sith. Roan had taken the planet knowing that while his new base could indeed be defeated by Sith Lord's entire military strength, so many resources would be wasted in the assault it would cripple Krayt's Empire, and therefore act as a deterrence to any attack.
