Roak
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Roak is a fictional planet in the Star Ocean universe. It is the primary setting of the first game in the series, Star Ocean: Fantastic Space Odyssey. Roak is located in the Theta sector, which is relatively close to Earth. The primary species of Roak is Felpool, a humanoid race sporting tails. There are also so-called Lesser Felpools, which are more primitive in nature, with more feline-like features, such as ears above the head. Another notable race are the Featherfolk, humanoids that resemble angels. Roak is considered an underdeveloped planet by Earth Federation standards, and consists of four main continents: Moore, Astral, Van, and Sylvalant. Each of these continents is also its own kingdom. The continents seemed to experience only one particular season. Moore, spring; Astral, summer; Van, fall; Sylvalant, winter.

[edit] Moore
The first continent encountered by the player, it is named after the "ancient species" known as Moorians. Moore contains three towns, sparse forests, grasslands, valleys, and a mountain known as Mt. Metox. The cities of Moore are:
- Clatos - The town at the southern edge of the continent, it is home to the protagonists Ratix Farrence, Dorn Malto, and Milly Kiliet. These three form the Clatos Brigade in order to protect the town from aggressive bandits.
- Cool (known as Hot in Roak's past) - A town very close to Clatos, at the foot of Mt. Metox. Milly's father, Maltos, travels here at the beginning of the game in an attempt to cure a disease. In Roak's past, when it was known as Hot, the party meets Cius Warren.
- Portmis - The capital of Moore, home to a large port and a castle. It has ships that sail to Otanim. A group of pirates known as the Velcant live close by.
[edit] Astral
The second continent encountered, Astral is almost entirely desert except to the north, which is partially grassland. In addition to four towns, Astral is also home to the mysterious Parj Sanctum. The settlements of Astral are as follows:
- Otanim - A small port town on the southeast side of the continent with ships leading to Portmis.
- Tatoroy - Tatoroy is home to a fighting arena, and serves as the only link to Astral Castle Town. The party can meet Ashlay Barnbelt here.
- Astral Castle Town - The capital of Astral, it is only accessible by boat or through a cave from Tatoroy. It is Cius Warren's home town, as well as captain of the Astral Knights, Fear Mell's.
- Tropp - A port town far to the west, it serves as a link to the Van continent.
[edit] Van
The third continent encountered, Van is mostly dense forest with large towns. It is physically connected to the Sylvalant continent, which is accessible through a cave network. Towns on Van are:
- Ecdart - A port town with ships that travel to Tropp.
- Ionis - A large merchant town with a wide variety of items catering to inventors. The party meets Ronixis J. Kenni and Marvel Frozen here.
- Van Castle Town - A town with a large castle, serving as the continent's capital.
[edit] Sylvalant
A frigid land to the north, Sylvalant is covered in snow and ice. It is home to a portal to the demon world, as well as an extensive cave network known as the Sylvalant Ruins. There is also a gate far to the north which may house an unnamed town. However, it is not possible to enter it. Other notable locations in Sylvalant are:
- Dulus - A very small, sleepy village close to the border of Van. It is destroyed by demons during the game's story.
- Sylvalant Castle Town - A fairly large town which serves as the nation's capital. It has a port which serves all three other continents, as well as passage to a small island containing the entrance to the demon world.
The blood of Roak's native species of Felpool caused the planet to be pulled into a war between the Resonians and the Earth Federation in Stardate 346 (2432 A.D.). The hemoglobin of Roakian blood contains a significant concentration of copper, but more notably, is able to absorb wavelengths between 240 nm and 780 nm, covering all of the visible light spectrum as well as a small section of both the infrared and ultraviolet. The Resonians unleashed a virus upon the planet to transform its natives into stone in order to easily harvest them, whereupon the Resonians could extract the Roakian blood as a basis for the cloaking technology of their starships.
It is also important to note that the original inhabitants of Roak were known as Moorians, and did not originate from Roak at all; rather, they came from Earth, specifically from the continent of Mu. A meteorite struck Mu somewhere around 1000 B.C., which opened a wormhole to Roak. The exact mechanism of how this was accomplished has not yet been explained in the Star Ocean series.
Roak was referenced during Sophia's ending some 400 years after the events of the original Star Ocean in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. Her transport was scheduled to land at Clatos Spaceport, the town where Ratix, Milly, and Dorn start their adventure in Star Ocean.
