[edit] Trivia

  • The songwriters did not know how they would end their story until reading Twain's own conclusion. "River Song" was inspired by the last page of Mark Twain's book. The author writes: "So endeth this chronicle. It being strictly a history of a boy, it must stop here; the story could not go much further without becoming the history of a man. When one writes a novel about grown people, he knows exactly where to stop -- that is, with a marriage; but when he writes of juveniles, he must stop where he best can."

[edit] Lyrics

Oh a river's gonna flow
Cross the land, Cross the land
Oh a river's gonna flow
To the sea
And a boy is gonna grow
To a man, To a man
Only once in his life is he free
Only once in his life is he free

River runs warm in the summer sun
River runs cold when the summer's done
But a boy is just a dreamer by the river side
'cause the water's too fast and the water's too wide
Then the world turns around and the boy grows tall
He hears the song of the river call
River song sings 'travel on, travel on'
You blink away a tear and the boy is gone

Oh a River's gonna flow
Cross the land, Cross the land
Oh a river's gonna flow
To the sea
And a boy is gonna grow
To a man, To a man
Only once in his life is he free
Only one golden time in his life
Is he free
