Ritz cracker
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ritz crackers are a type of cracker produced by Nabisco. They are circular in shape, salted, and have small scalloping around the edge. They are buttery and are eaten plain or with a topping.
Production of Ritz crackers began in 1935, the year in which, according to official numbers provided by the company, there were approximately 40 crackers for each American person. Ritz crackers also became a hit in Europe. It is said that many men would take chocolate-box shaped boxes of Ritz Crackers to propose to their girlfriends. In addition, passengers could buy Ritz crackers for 19 cents at the Queen Mary ocean liner. Since the 1970s, this product can also be bought in circular biscuit tins.
[edit] Types of Ritz crackers
In recent years, several types of Ritz crackers have hit the market. One popular type in the U.S is "Ritz Bits Sandwiches". They are miniature-sized Ritz cracker sandwiches with several types of filling in between the two crackers. The flavors of filling consist of: Cheese, Peanut Butter, S'mores, and just recently Peanut Butter and Jelly. A pizza version was sold in the early 1990s and again in the early '00s. Plain Ritz Bits were also sold. Ritz crackers are also available in a toasted crisp chip called "Ritz Toasted Chips" and in an elongated form known as Ritz Sticks. Ritz Toasted chips used to be called "Ritz Chips", but were changed to coincide with Wheat Thins Toasted Chips. This is only in the U.S., but are still called Ritz Chips in Canada.
Ritz crackers are sold at supermarkets in many countries around the world.
