Rising Dissent

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rising Dissent is a hardcore punk band which formed in Orange County, California in 2001. Their lyrics, which are primarily political, address topics such as anti-capitalism, anti-globalization, the "war on terror", immigrant rights, police brutality, civil disobedience and dissent, though some songs tackle more personal issues. They have organized or performed at many benefit shows for causes such as Food Not Bombs, Indymedia, the Centro Cultural de Mexico, political prisoners, women's shelters, and others.

In the spring of 2005, drummer Albert Hui left the band, to pursue his own project. He then formed Deadhead Lettuce; a melodic hardcore band inwhich he took a lead role in songwriting and vocals.

In September 2006, the band's Myspace revealed to fans that they had disbanded. There have not been any official statements as to why the band decided to call it quits. While many believe that the band had already lost momentum after half of the band relocated to San Francisco, others speculate that there were intense differences between frontmen Alex and Steve.

The members of Rising Dissent continue to stay active in either political activism or hardcore punk. Steve and Sina remain in southern Orange County, California where Steve serves smoothies at a local Jamba Juice and Sina stimulates the local hardcore punk scene by promoting shows and playing in multiple groups: Take It Back, Deadhead Lettuce, Second Smile, and xFeeding Frenzyx. Alex and Aaron continue to attend San Francisco State University, while working with the International Socialist Organization and studying Marxism Leninism.

[edit] Ideology

Early on, the band advocated several forms of anarchism. The liner notes of their 2004 self-titled release quotes Emma Goldman and suggests a plethora of radical literature such as CrimethInc.

In late 2005, after several band members moved to San Francisco, California for college, they began to preach Marxism. Guitarists Alex Fu and Aaron Jaramillo are now members of the International Socialist Organization. Their Myspace indicates their advocation of Marxist analysis through dialectical and historical materialism.
