Rise of the Ogre is a fictional autobiography about the virtual band Gorillaz, detailing the life-stories of the fictional band-members: Murdoc Niccals, 2D, Russel Hobbs and Noodle. Ostensibly written by the four band-members in collaboration with (actual) Gorillaz musician and official scribe Cass Browne, the book is over 300 pages long and is extensively illustrated. It will contain previously unknown secrets of the band, such as future plans of the movie, new aend rare art by Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, the "low down" on Kong Studios, their headquarters, and the story of the truth behind the "El Mañana" video. In October, a trailer was made that was sort of a promo for the release of the book, which is still available for viewing. Before it was released, someone who got the book early confirmed at Gorillaz-Unofficial about the truth behind "El Mañana". During its availability for pre-order, there was a contest to win a signed copy of the book by Hewlett and Browne themselves if one had pre-ordered by October 27. Only 50 of the copies will get the signatures. Rise of the Ogre has been known as an "essential purchase for legions of fans". It was released in the UK on October 26, 2006 by Michael Joseph Ltd. and also in the US on November 2, 2006 by Riverhead Books.
Rise of the Ogre has also been released as the world's first audiobook single.
