The second book in the Farsala trilogy by Hilari Bell.

[edit] Synopsis

Legend has it that when Farsala most needs a warrior to lead it, Sorahb son of Rostam will be restored by the god Azura. That time has come. After a devastating loss to the army of the Hrum, Farsala has all but fallen. Only the walled city of Mazad and a few of the more uninhabitable regions remain free of Hrum rule, and they seem destined to fall as well. Farsala needs a champion now.

In status quo, only a few young boys remain of the Faran army. They are led by the High Commander's son, Jiaan, who assumed the lead position after his father's death. Elsewhere, his half-sister Soraya has learned of the battle's outcome and now seeks to find her surviving relatives and rescue them from slavery. Kavi, the blacksmith turned swindler who betrayed Farsala to the Hrum, now regrets his action and rallies the peasants of his homeland to harass their conquerors. If any Hrum ask who perpetrated the harassment, the peasants say that Sorahb did it.

A common quest to drive out the Hrum brings the young people together. Although Jiaan wants revenge on Kavi for his act of betrayal, Soraya persuades her father's son of their mutual need. They vow jointly to complete their quest.
