Ripto
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ripto is a recurring antagonist in the Spyro the Dragon series of video games, appearing in five of the Spyro series games, a stark contrast to other Spyro series villains who have generally appeared in one game apiece. Ripto can cast multiple spells, creating monsters with them. He flies on birds, rides on dinosaurs, and attempted to initiate an Avalarian siege - during which he ruled as King Ripto, monarch of Riptonia. He also teamed up with Dr. Neo Cortex to try and rule the world. He is often found stealing the dragons' power sources, such as the fireflies and the dragonflies. Ripto has been numerously tagged by Spyro as 'shorty', thanks to his diminutive physique.

[edit] Appearances
[edit] Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!
In his first appearance, Ripto was brought into the realm of Avalar by mistake when Hunter the cheetah tried to test out a new super-portal created by the Professor. Upon realizing that there were no native dragons in Avalar, Ripto attempted to take over the realm, declaring he would transform it into a new kingdom called "Riptonia".
[edit] Ripto's spells
As Ripto is a wizard, he is always thinking up new spells to defeat Spyro. In Ripto's first appearance, he used a magical scepter powered by colourful orbs that both he and Spyro used against each other. He can create barriers of magical elements in front of him, and even transformed himself into a monster once.
[edit] Crush and Gulp
Ripto's two original minions, Crush and Gulp were the other two bosses of the second Spyro game. They are assumed to be some sort of dinosaur, but because of later games, they may be riptocs (or maybe even gnorcs, since in Enter the Dragonfly Ripto mentions that he found Gulp begging for work for Gnasty Gnorc). They were defeated by Spyro but returned as bosses later in Spyro 2: Season of Flame and Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy.
- Crush.
Armed with a large wooden club, Crush loves to smash all things in his path. Unfortunately, Crush's lack of brain cells means he may end up smashing the wrong target. Had a large shield in Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy. He also has a pair of wings on his back, apparently too small to help him fly.
- Gulp
Slightly smarter than Crush, Gulp is a behemoth Riptoc who is also Ripto's favourite mode of transport. He has aspirations to become a cook, which may explain his tendency to roast his foes. A robot version of Gulp also aids Ripto during the final battle of Spyro 2. In battle he has a pair of laser weapons mounted on his back, which also acted as rocket boosters in Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy
[edit] Riptocs
Riptocs are Ripto's answer to the rhynocs of Grendor and the Sorceress. Though he did not use them in Ripto's Rage, they accompanied him in his attempted conquest of the Dragon Realms in Enter the Dragonfly. However, Ripto actually hired the rhynocs instead of the riptocs to help him in his quest to steal all the fireflies and when he invaded the Dragon Realms. Many other kinds of monsters have worked for Ripto:
[edit] Trivia
Ripto was voiced by Gregg Berger.
The name "Ripto" was chosen by the development team because it resembles how the name "Spyro" looks when written in Japanese (スパイロ).
He appeared in Spyro 3 in an epilogue page with Gnasty Gnorc discussing the "Spyro Problem". Also, his symbol (from Spyro 2) was on the bottom of a rocket-powered skateboard.
