The Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings are an independent minor league baseball team in Harlingen, Texas. The WhiteWings began as a charter member of the Texas-Louisiana League in 1994, which became the Central Baseball League. The WhiteWings won the Texas-Louisiana League Championship in 2000, upsetting the San Angelo Colts and Amarillo Dillas to win the pennant under manager Eddie Dennis. After falling on hard times the WhiteWings suspended operations in 2003. In late 2005, United League Baseball announced that the WhiteWings would resume play as the first charter member of the new league in 2006. The team plays at Harlingen Field, which seats 4,500.

[edit] Winter League WhiteWings

Rio Grande Valley also fields a wintertime version of the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, which will begin play mid-January of 2007. It is one of four teams in the United League Baseball Winter League, the only league of its kind in the continental United States, which plays a 24-game schedule from mid-January through mid-February of each year. All games will be played at the WhiteWings' home ballpark of Harlingen Field. Each team will have a 25-player roster, and the teams will play doubleheaders each day with 4 days off during the regular season. Other teams playing will include Brownsville, the Edinburg Coyotes and Laredo Broncos. This league operates as a winter counterpart to the regular United League with its own identity, teams, standings and statistics.
