Whilst at the Junior School, Wilson was in Smeaton house, named after the former pupil John Smeaton. He is referred to in the Kaiser Chiefs song, "I Predict a Riot". Wilson is known for his sense of style, particularly his blazers, waistcoats, stripey underpants, turn-up jeans and winklepickers for which he won the 2006 Shockwaves NME Award For Best Dressed Person. His greatest talent is his ability to "pogo" about the stage frantically whilst simultaneously playing either the cowbell or the tambourine. At 2005's Glastonbury Festival Wilson dived into the audience to drag a large green inflatable dinosaur onstage, which he then draped his tie around.

Wilson's father is a producer for the BBC and was the television executive responsible for It's a Royal Knockout, which featured Sarah Ferguson, Prince Edward, Joe Orton and Little and Large amongst others. Wilson has also been on the panel of the BBC comedy series Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 2005, and later became a guest host in 2006. On May 22, 2006, Wilson survived a hit and run incident in Leeds. He escaped with minor injuries thanks to a trademark stage jump which made him leap over the bonnet of the car, however he had to perform with his ankle in a cast for much of the summer. Ricky has bought an apartment in Armley.

Wilson likes crowdsurfing, Britpop and his home team, Leeds United. He is said to be allergic to dairy products, coloured toilet paper and feathers. Also, when he is working he goes to bed at one or two in the morning, and on his days off he turns in around 11 p.m.

He shocked many of the members of the Kaiser Chiefs Forum by recently posting five posts on there in a day. Previously, he has claimed that he isn't very good with technology even though he taught a web design course titled 'New Media' at Leeds College of Art and Design. It was later found his account had been hacked.

He has stated in an interview that he likes to sing the song "Better the Devil You Know" in the shower.
