[edit] History
Anna Goodling grew up in Cottage Grove, Oregon, but spent much of her time in Portland and the surrounding areas. In the mid-1990s, she changed her name to Rickey Lime (a pun on the cocktail called a Lime Rickey) and began playing guitar. She was looking for other woman who wanted to start a rock band, and found them when visiting Olympia, Washington. There, she formed Shotgun Won in 1998, and the band lasted a year and a half. The band consisted of Lime on guitar, Erin McCarley on drums, vocalist Amber Bayer, and Kelly Chambers on bass. They four women played straight-forward Rock and roll music, citing female rockers such as Pat Benetar, The Go-Go's, Suzi Quatro, Joan Jett, Heart, and Crown for Athena as their major influences. Though never actually having a deal in place, Shotgun Won was closely associated with the Kill Rock Stars family tree. They were part of the first Ladyfest, which took place in Olympia in August 2000, with over 2000 people attending. The band broke up soon after, in late 2000. McCarley and Bayer went on to form Delta Dart. Lime moved to Los Angeles to find a new band in 2002.
Lime joined Scarling in 2003 as a rhythm guitarist, along with drummer Garey Snider and bassist Kyle Lime (no relation.) Founding members Jessicka and Christian Hejnal had already been writing and recording tracks that would appear on Scarling.'s debut single, "Band Aid Covers the Bullet Hole".
Scarling's sound is influenced by My Bloody Valentine, Loop, Lush, the Pixies, Sonic Youth and The Cure, as well as by the 1990s riot grrl scene.
In the autumn of 2004, Scarling was invited to join the lineup of the Robert Smith-formed Curiosa Festival, performing on select West Coast dates alongside Interpol, The Rapture, Mogwai, and The Cure. Three weeks before Scarling. joined the Curiosa tour, drummer Garey Snider was briefly replaced by Samantha Maloney, and soon after by current drummer Beth Gordon. After finishing out their dates on the Curiosa Festival, Scarling. with the help of Rickey's long time friend and fill in bassist Radio Sloan, continued to play around Los Angeles and San Francisco at high profile indie clubs such as Spaceland and The Troubadour. In 2005, Scarling announced that their second album would be titled So Long, Scarecrow. The album would be the first in which Lime was able to showcase her writing talents. She wrote the track "In Pretend World" and co-wrote several other songs on the album.
In December 2005 Scarling embarked on its first UK tour, creating a buzz for themselves and selling out most venues. SLS's first single, "City Noise," is featured on the compilation Alright, This Time Just the Girls Vol. 2. Scarling's music has been featured on Showtime's The L Word, and an upcoming episode of medical drama Grey's Anatomy is entitled Band Aid Covers The Bullet Hole.
In 2006 Rickey continues to tour in the US and Europe with Scarling. Along the way, touring with such bands as UK shoegaze outfit Amusement Parks on Fire and opening for The Wedding Present and Depeche Mode. Scarling. are expected to begin working on their third full length album in early 2007.
