Rick was born and raised in the Sale area of manchester and educated at a local grammar school before going down to Hertford_College,_Oxford, to study biochemistry.
He is most widely known for his work on the sporulation pathway of Bacillus_subtilis and has published widely on the sporulation proteins SpoOA and the regulator of SigmaB pathway.
