Rhydlafar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rhydlafar is a small suburb on the edge of the city of Cardiff and town of Llantrisant in South Wales, United Kingdom.

Formerly the site of a specialist hospital and more recently a new housing development which further extends the city of Cardiff.

The name probably originates from the Welsh for the word 'flow', (see also 'Rhydaman' or 'Ammanford', etc) and the stream 'lafar' which flows nearby. Incidentally, 'llafar' is Welsh for 'speech' or 'chat' - so the name may literally mean the 'flow of conversation'.

Whilst the above is and exact literal translation of the name, it is more likely to be 'Rhyd' (old Welsh word for Ford) and 'llafar' voiced, spoken ie. The ford that "babbles".
