Rheinwiesenlager
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rheinwiesenlager (Rhine meadow camps) were transit camps for millions of German POWs after World War II. A few thousand German POWs died from starvation, dehydration and exposure to the weather elements.
Official United States statistics were just over 3,000 and a German commission found 4,532. R. J. Rummel calculates a most probable figure of 6,000. Extremely high figures of up to a million are sometimes quoted, for instance, by James Bacque, but these seem not to be based on any hard evidence, and are generally regarded as latter-day propaganda.
