Rheingold Beer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rheingold Beer was a New York beer that held 35 percent of the state's beer market from 1950 to 1960. The company was sold by its founding Liebman family in 1963.

At the center of its media campaign was the "Miss Rheingold" pagaent. Beer drinkers would vote each year on the young lady who would be featured as Miss Rheingold in advertisements. The company's headquarters were in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Rheingold shut down operations in 1976, unable to compete with the large national breweries.

The label was revived in 1999, by Terry Liebman and partner Mike Mitaro. In an October 18, 1999 New York Observer article, Mitaro's Rheingold Brewing Company LLC was reported as buying the brand after a career at Labatt U.S.A. The article also reported that Liebman was a relative of Rheingold's founding family.

In 2005, Drinks America purchased Rheingold Brewing.

It is brewed by the Matt Brewery in Utica, New York and Greenpoint Beer Works in Brooklyn.
