User:RHaworth/Islands in name only of England
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are a number of places in England with Isle or Island in their names but which would not usually be considered islands. These can be classified as places that:
- were islands once but have now become part of the mainland, notably Thanet
- are still islands but are only separated by narrow channels, eg. Portsea Island
- were islands of higher ground within fens, eg. Ely
- are peninsulas rather than true islands, eg. Purbeck
