Rexair LLC is an American manufacturer of vacuum cleaners and is currently based in Troy, Michigan. The company was founded in 1929 by Leslie H. Green, who marketed a bagless vacuum cleaner designed by John W Newcombe. In 1936, the company introduced a vacuum cleaner with a water filtration system, a feature that would become the focus of Rexair's marketing. The "Rainbow" series of vacuums was introduced in 1955 and became the company's flagship product. In 1959, the company was purchased by businessman J.V. Sanders, who restructured the company to focus on direct marketing of their products via independently owned distributors. This system, known as "The Rainbow Opportunity", still remains to this date. Direct marketing of vacuum cleaners is often associated with unsolicited door-to-door sales; although the company claims that in home demonstrations are now by appointment only. [1]

As of September 2006, the current model is the Rainbow E2 which typically sells between $1,200 to $2,000 US dollars depending on attachments purchased and the ability of the customer to haggle. [2] The salesman may offer free attachments or other incentives to a customer in exchange for referrals to other households that would be willing to allow an in home demonstration.
