Revenge of the Mummy is an indoor steel roller coaster featured at both the Universal Orlando Resort and the Universal Studios Hollywood theme parks. Both coasters are based upon the popular Mummy movie franchise directed by Stephen Sommers. The rides opened on May 21, 2004 (Florida) and June 25, 2004 (Hollywood) and were built by Premier Rides. The Orlando version of the ride was reputed to be built at a cost of $40,000,000 USD[citation needed]. Both coasters have a height restriction of 48 inches[citation needed].

The Revenge of the Mummy coasters use Linear Induction Motors (LIM), a technology used to launch riders from a complete standstill. The coaster in Florida features 3 LIM launches.

The coaster in Florida lasts 3 minutes and features a top speed of 45 mph[citation needed]. The track is 2200 ft long featuring no inversions and a 50 degree angle of descent[citation needed]. The building housing of the Florida coaster was previously home to one of Universal's landmark attractions, "Kongfrontation". Homages to the Kong attraction can be found in several areas within the Mummy attraction[citation needed]. The Hollywood version lasts about 2 minutes[citation needed] and is housed in the building for another former attraction, the E.T. Adventure.

Whilst both rides share the same name, both have very different plots and track layouts. The Florida version boasts a fake unload section. The Hollywood version boasts a backwards section climaxing in a fiery turntable ending.

[edit] Florida Version

Guests enter the ride by browsing through a film setup for the fictional "third Mummy movie". The film's props, molds, and concept drawings are on display near the entrance to the ride. The inside queue morphs into a 1940s archeological dig, where guests board mine cars utilizing individual lap bars.

Once the mine cars move away from the loading area, guests discover Reggie, a production assistant of the set, being sacrificed to Imhotep. Imhotep tell the riders that "With your souls, I shall rule for all eternity". The mine cars make their way into a giant treasure room, featuring many artifacts and a King Kong statue (in homage to the attraction's original tenant). Imhotep offers riders a life of riches or "bitter treasure" before warrior mummies arise. The cars dip out from under a falling wall, and are sent into an encounter with scarab beetles, before being sent backwards, rotated, then rocketed upwards into the coaster portion straight through Imoteps mouth. The ride goes through a series of highly banked turns and a few drops, there are however, no inversions.

The ride features a "fake unload" sequence, parodying the unload areas of theme park rides. The silhouette of a worker sitting in a control booth is seen, before she is disintegrated into a skeleton. The booth's window "explodes" and Imhotep is seen in 3 dimensional animatronic form. Promising that "Death is only the beginning!" The cars are launched down a 26 ft drop into a fiery pit and are sent hurtling towards the finale.

Fans of the ride find the Florida version to be the better of the two [citation needed]. And for best riding experience, the back row offers the most intense ride with pops of airtime on various hills/drops.

[edit] Hollywood Version

The Hollywood version of the ride features scarab beetles, warrior mummies, and Imhotep in sand form as well. However the movie set backstory is dropped in favor of an actual cursed tomb, where riders board mine cars. Hollywood's coaster was built in the gutted E.T. Adventure building, so the coaster was built by digging downward to accommodate space. The coaster features a long backwards section, unlike Florida. Also unlike Florida's version, there is no "fake unload" sequence or Brendan Fraser film projection at the end.

[edit] Hollywood Description

When first entering the ride queue, guests are brought into a dark tomb, with hieroglyphs covering the walls. Before loading into the ride, guests are told the story of Imhotep and his plan to destroy humankind with a solar eclipse. The ride starts by slowly moving into the tomb, past corpses returning to life. The ride stops to find find an archaeologist warning guests that the curse is real and to leave the tomb. He is sudeenly engulfed by scarab beetles as the ride brings guest deeper into the tomb, past even more of Imhotep's followers coming to life. The guests enter into the Treasure Room and see on the wall the image of Imhotep's face made of sand. He gives the riders the option to serve him with eternal life or die. His Warrior mummies attack the car as it launches towards the underworld. The car stops again as scarabs pour out at the guests. The car moves backwards into the tomb again and after a few moments stops in the daylight outside of the tomb. The solar eclipse is occurring and Imhotep's curse is broken as the ride ends.
