[edit] Haven
Creatures: | Karnaks, Dan'nis, Camoudiles, Zeftyrs, Mangrees, Cerpatees, and other animals, also several species of fish. |
Geography: | Surrounded by a raging sea, the central land is shielded from the waves by a series of boulders. Beyond the windy, rugged coastline is a tropical jungle, which encircles a small lagoon. |
Inhabitants: | Achenar (during his imprisonment). |
Vegetation: | Tropical plants and trees, tall, savanna grass, swamp mosses. |
Written by: | Atrus |
Haven is a quite lush and jungle-like Age. It is the prison age for Achenar. What appear to be dinosaur-like creatures also inhabit this jungle world. Its original entrance was a large, wrecked sailing ship which stood upon its side on the shores. A new entrance was written into the age, composed of unbreakable Nara so that Atrus and his family could visit the age, but Achenar could not exit.
During Achenar's imprisonment, he was confronted with surviving along side of the notorious wildlife, who often stole his food and attacked him. Originally he made his home in the wrecked ship, where he made traps to catch Karnaks for food. It was during this time that he battled and killed the dangerous, dinosaur-like predator by capturing its mate and luring it to him. Later he records in his journal that he fears he may have driven the species into extinction. Eventually, Achenar constructed a large house in the center of the lagoon in the jungle to be his new home, where he encountered a new tribe of Mangrees who befriended him.
This was the age originally viewable through the Blue Book in the library of Myst.
[edit] Spire
Creatures: | Small luminous organisms seen around light sources; possibly fire-flies. |
Geography: | A planet of great, towering stone mountains, shaped like ancient castles and encrusted with crystals and floating rocks. It also has several cloud layers. |
Inhabitants: | Sirrus (during his imprisonment). |
Vegetation: | Pod plants and swamp mosses. |
Written by: | Atrus |
Spire is the prison age for Sirrus. It is an enormous spire of rock and crystal surrounded by clouds, with some interesting natural weathering occurring. The clouds occur in layers. Atrus wrote that though many features of the age, such as its steps and arches, appeared man-made, that Spire had never had any inhabitants. This was the first of Atrus's two prison ages to be written. Later, it was edited to add a linking chamber made of durable Nara atop the highest pinnacle.
The true geography of Spire is very surprising; the mountains actually float in mid-air due to an electromagnetic property of one of Spire's main minerals. Spire doesn't actually have stable ground; if you go below the second cloud layer, a strange green energy source can be seen.
Sirrus has constructed several inventions in Spire, amongst them his Rock-Ship, a floating vehicle which moves with the aid of several electricity conductors and many of the antigravity minerals in Spire. Others include his Spider Chair and Grand Instrument, a large, guitar-like device with vibrations caused by electromagnetic waves, and the Bomb Factory, a machine used to construct "bombs" that use harmonic resonance to destroy certain materials.
This was the age originally viewable through the Red Book in the library of Myst.
[edit] Serenia
Creatures: | Prominently White Butterflies and several other creatures. |
Geography: | A stony area covered in tall, columns of stone (stone forest) with many jagged cliffs by the sea. Irrigation systems exist, many involve gravity- defying water |
Inhabitants: | Humanoid people, arranged into villages and sisterhoods, spirits |
Vegetation: | Tropical plants and chambers, mosses, giant flowers known as Memory Chambers |
Written by: | Catherine |
Serenia is an Age of ancient-looking stone structures. Its population uses a large flower on the island to capture memories and preserve them after the person is dead. Atrus believes that the flower is a fungus that absorbs the "dead" memories and transfers them to storage globes that grow underwater. The people of Serenia rely on Spirit Guides to aid them in visiting their Dream World, where one can see memories and spirits.
There Sirrus and Achenar agreed on a truce, and decided to capture their father and steal his memories. For this, they decided to send Katran to Riven. Afterwards Achenar discovered that Sirrus planned this for him too and left him.
More recently, Yeesha has taken a liking to the age, and received a special amulet which can sense the memories most prominent to her location. The stranger uses this in the game often.
The brothers kidnapped Yeesha and decided to do to her what they intended for their father years earlier but the Stranger, with the help of Achenar, freed her.
[edit] Other Ages
- Tomahna, the home of Atrus, Catherine, and their daughter Yeesha, re-appears from Myst III: Exile. You can not only access the portion of Tomahna visited in Myst III, but also visit the rest of the complex during both the day and night.
- Releeshahn, the new home Age of the D'ni, is mentioned but not actually visited. Since the age's kidnapping in the previous game, it has been well hidden.
- Rime is mentioned during the start of the game. Atrus leaves the stranger to visit Rime early in the game.
