[edit] Glossary of terms

  • The Ecliptic Express - A private luxury train which once ferried Umbrella employees through the Arklay Mountains region. It was destroyed in 1998 when it careened into an underground chamber below the Umbrella Management Training Facility.
  • The G-Virus - A viral strain developed by William Birkin that was designed to be superior to the T-Virus. Exposure to the virus in its pure form causes the host to transform into a powerful killing machine, similar to the Tyrants. Unlike the Tyrants, the G-virus monster (known simply as G) continues to grow and evolve over time. See G-Virus for more information.
  • GALAXIE-5000 - The name of the evacuation train in Umbrella's subterranean laboratory in Raccoon City.
  • Management Training Facility - An old Umbrella facility in the Arklay Mountains directed by Dr. James Marcus before it was closed down. In 1998, two teams were sent by Umbrella to reopen the facility but both were obliterated by T-Virus infected creatures.
  • Metal Industries Co. - This corporation was in the process of selling its newly developed "TG-01" metal alloy, undetectable by metal detectors, to Umbrella when the events of Resident Evil Code: Veronica occurred.
  • Raccoon City - A city in the Mid-Western United States with a population of some 100,000, many of which were employed by Umbrella. In September 1998, rats were infected by a T-Virus leak in a subterranean Umbrella lab and spread the virus throughout the city. By October 1st, the situation because so dire that Raccoon City was destroyed by a warhead deployed in a joint effort by the United States Government and the Umbrella Corporation. This event ultimately lead to the downfall of the Umbrella Corporation. See Raccoon City for more information.
  • R.F.D. - An acronym which stands for the Raccoon City Fire Department. Although wrecked fire engines are invisible in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, living members of the R.F.D. are not introduced until Resident Evil Outbreak where they play a fairly prominent role in gameplay.
  • R.P.D. - An acronym which stands for the Raccoon City Police Department, headed by corrupt Police Chief Brian Irons.
  • S - A codename referring to the company Albert Wesker is working for. The company became suspsicious of his intentions and had Ada Wong sabotage his attempt to procure a sample of the Las Plagas parasite.
  • Samurai Edge - A custom version of the Beretta 92 designed by gunsmith Joe Kendo and assigned as the standard side arm for all S.T.A.R.S. operatives. Eight standard models were distributed among S.T.A.R.S, while four specialized models were made for Jill, Chris, Wesker and Barry (the last one uses .40 S&W bullets in the place of the standard 9x19 parabellum rounds).
  • Select Police Force - The Select Police Force of the Raccoon City Police Department was a unit of experienced police officers chosen to fill in the gap that the recently disbanded Special Tactics and Rescue Service had created.
  • Tyrants - The Tyrant was the final boss of the original Resident Evil, and has played a role as a major boss monster in many subsequent titles. Tyrants are powerful Umbrella B.O.W.s created with a direct T-Virus injection, and a series of surgical operations. Only a very small percentage of individuals who are exposed to the T-virus have the potential to be transformed into Tyrants, most simply become meager zombies. In Resident Evil: Survivor, it is revealed that the creation of Tyrants requires a hormone that can only be obtained directly from the brain of a teenager in mid-puberty while he is subjected to extremely painful torture. Every Tyrant created requires the sacrifice of one teenager's life.
    • In its raw form, the Tyrant is more than twice as tall as a normal human being, and has a heart located outside of the body cavity, on its upper right chest. As a weapon, the Tyrant's right hand is massive, with claws several feet long. Although they usually move at a slow, leisurely pace, the Tyrant can move at incredible speed, and when angered is capable of a rapid rushing attack that allows it to charge a couple dozen feet within a second.
    • Tyrants are infamous for their indestructibility. A weak, newly thawed Tyrant may be temporarily brought down by gunfire, but at full strength a Tyrant is completely immune to small arms fire. Only an extremely powerful weapon, such as a rocket launcher, can destroy one.
  • The T-Virus: The virus primarily responsible for most of the mayhem seen in the Resident Evil series. It is highly contagious, and has a mutating effect on organic cells. In vials, it is in a liquid state, but becomes a gas when released. The effect of the virus varies from organism to organism. Mammals, such as humans or dogs, become mindless, decaying zombies when exposed. Less evolved organisms (such as plants, insects, and reptiles) experience rapid mutation, often growing several times in size. All T-virus mutated organisms develop highly aggressive, carnivorous tendencies. Although highly contagious when initially released in its gaseous form, the virus disperses quickly, and soon becomes infectious only through the bite of carrier organisms. See T-virus for more information.
  • The T-Veronica Virus - A combination of the T-virus and ant DNA developed by the Ashford family.
  • U.S.S. - An acronym which stands for Umbrella Security Service, a specialized unit separate from U.B.C.S.
  • Umbrella, Inc. - The main antagonist in the series, Umbrella Inc. is the corporation responsible for manufacturing and releasing the zombie-producing T-virus (developed as a B.O.W.), as well as various mutant monsters. It was originally founded by Lord Ozwell Spencer, Dr. James Marcus, and Edward Ashford in order to exploit a primordial, mutagenic virus the three of them had discovered. The company eventually grew into a massive mega-corporation, dealing primarily with pharmaceuticals but also manufacturing a variety of other products, including firearms, computers, and security systems. The company also controls a small army of privately funded soldiers, ranging from third-world mercenaries to black ops assassins. Umbrella Inc. is also ruthless and amoral. One of the strongest examples of their depravity is the fact they have tortured and killed teenagers in order to produce their Tyrant bioweapons. However, much of the suffering seen in the Resident Evil games is actually a product of Umbrella's incompetence rather than their maliciousness. Almost all of the various T-virus outbreaks and monster massacres seen in the series are the results of careless handling and shoddy containment protocols, rather than any deliberate malice. See Umbrella Corporation for more information.
  • Wesker's Report - A DVD bonus movie that was included with the initial copies of Resident Evil Code: Veronica X as a pre-order bonus. The movie is narrated by Albert Wesker, and attempts to tie together the plots of the various Resident Evil games into a single, coherent narrative. Although fairly comprehensive, many details of the report contradict information that comes directly from the games, so how canonical the report is remains a matter of debate.
