Resende, Rio de Janeiro

Resende is a municipality/county in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It was founded in 1744 by the bandeirante Simão da Cunha Gago and was called Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Campo Alegre da Paraíba Nova. The indians Puri called it Timburibá. On September 29, 1801 it was renamed Resende, after the act of 13rd vice-regent of Brazil and 2nd Conde de Resende, General José Luís de Castro. There is a military academy located in Resende. Its main economy of Resende is coffee and milk in the agricultural sector, uranium refining and vehicle manufacturing which includes factories for Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroën. Its geography includes a mountain range, a hill (Pico do Itatiaia) and a river (Rio Paraíba do Sul). The tourist attractions include Visconde de Mauá and the first Brazilian National Park, called Parque Nacional do Itatiaia (PNI).
