Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/History Student

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

User is uncivil, fails to assume good faith, and edit wars, specifically on Japanese_American_internment. Other editors have been very patient with his claims that everyone editing the article are "reparations activists", etc. The user has some interesting content to add and does a lot of research but his conduct on the talk page appears to be trolling.

As this is just an RfC I'm not going to put together diffs at this point, but believe me, it isn't hard to find inappropriate conduct.

You need to start providing some substantial contributions to the discussion rather than opinion and hyperbole. It's obvious from your most recent posts that you have a limited knowledge of this history which begs the question why are you even interested in contributing?

Isn't there a topic with which you have knowledge and can make a meaningful contribution? --History Student 21:36, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

This is about your conduct, not my knowledge of history. BTW, there's a response section for your comments up above. Justforasecond 21:58, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

I basically agree with Justforasecond, but it's important to note that HS has brought questions about Japanese American internment that should be addressed--and as justforasecond noted in talk, substantial problems (particularly citations and pov) have remained in the article. They have been raised before on this article, and they will be raised again, whether or not HS continues to contribute. So it's better to address them now. Unfortunately, HS makes it difficult to engage in consensus-building dialogue, mainly because this editor does not assume good faith. If this editor would be willing (1) to make edits in more incremental steps, and (2) work more collaboratively with other editors, the article could be much improved due to HS's valuable challenges to claims and citations. --ishu 00:43, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

I'll add some examples of positive contributions that HS has made.

I agree his contributions can be valuable, but the conduct needs to change. How can anyone cooperate with HS at the current rate? He sounds reasonable in the diff you provide, but several other times he's insulted he's even people that think his contributions are needed. Justforasecond 16:58, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
Having now signed on to this RfC, I "officially" agree with you, including what you write above. I did want to show that, a few times, HS has provided valuable contributions in a less abrasive manner. As I imply above, I'd like to see a commitment from HS to collaborative practices in particular and Wiki guidelines in general. --ishu 04:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

I noted this on the Talk: Japanese_American_Internment page, but felt it worth repeating here: User: History Student has also posted as User: 207.207.79.202. Many of the anonymous comments on the relevant Talk page can be attributed to him. --Ogthor 21:51, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

HS seems to have gone quiet. At least he hasnt' responded here. I guess we can just leave this be for now. I agree with Ishu that a satisfactory conclusion would be for HS to agree to follow wiki policies -- specifically AGF and civility, e.g. no more calling everyone "pro-reparatioins activists", or inserting huge photos repeatedly Justforasecond 22:18, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Looking at HS's user contributions, it seems to be true that HS is quiet. I waited over 24 hours to sign onto this RfC, and decided to endorse it because of HS's history of spoofing IP addresses and threats to do so in the future. So, given the risk of HS coming back under a sock puppet, I thought it would be a good idea to document the behavior under this account. ishu 00:31, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Ah, hello. Don't mean to butt in (especially as I have little knowledge of the subject in contention), but I would like to point out that History Student has recreated the Japanese American Evacuation of 1942 article despite a AfD that resulted in the deletion of the article. --NeoChaosX 04:14, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I don't think we should waste any more time with this RfC. If any of you know any like-minded admins a short-term block for disruption is probably called for. Alternatively we can do an RfAr but as HS won't speak for himself and no one is standing up for him I don't think that process is necessary. Justforasecond 04:57, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I have signed on as officially endorsing the summary of the dispute, as I'm not sure if my interactions with HS qualify as "trying and failing to resolve the dispute" (relevant diffs are [2] and [3], not sure if HS' failure to respond counts as failure to resolve). --Ogthor 23:37, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I have (temporarily?) withdrawn endorsement pending possible dispute resolution on HS' Talk page.--Ogthor 09:23, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 69.57.136.39

69.57.136.39 is also associated with HS. As is 70.129.12.61

Justforasecond 18:36, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

I've reported this to WP:ANI. --NeoChaosX 20:45, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
