[edit] Vsmith

final (25/0/1) ending 00:36 6 July 2005 (UTC)

Vsmith has been here since July 7, 2004 and has made major contributions in geology, earth sciences and climate change. He is a responsible, reliable and trustworthy user who I have no doubt will make good use of the admin tools. He has accumulated 4447 edits (if anyone's counting). Guettarda 29 June 2005 00:36 (UTC)

I accept. Thanks Guettarda. -Vsmith 29 June 2005 02:22 (UTC)

  13. Support. Great work an would be trustworthy I'm sure. I'm not sure what value for adminship purposes it would add to edit outside your expertise area. Good contributions are important, not topic. - Taxman Talk June 30, 2005 17:25 (UTC)

Oppose

Neutral

  1. Neutral. Seems like a good user and I'm sure he'll make a good admin. Though I have a fondness for geologists, I'm voting neutral because I see almost no contributions outside the world of geology and I think admins should be a bit more catholic in their work. What does religion have to do with anything :P? Just kidding. I have no view on this user - never come across him. Harro5 July 2, 2005 23:35 (UTC)

Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
My first chore will be to continue fighting vandalism and spam. I have 1500 pages on watch, some of which are vandalism magnets, and the rollback button will be handy. Also will help with speedy deletion work. Requested moves and cut & paste fixes are a couple of tasks I would help with as well. My main objective on Wikipedia is to write good science related articles, help clarify and improve those that exist, learn a bit along the way and have fun. I don't intend to let admin. duties take the fun away.
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
The coordination and creation of the List of minerals (complete) pages with User:Jolyonralph (which I need to update) which incorporates the extensive Mindat.org mineral database into Wikipedia. In addition I have set up mineral categories based on accepted mineralogic classification and started mineral classification articles (see Silicate minerals). I also helped clarify the geology for a number of featured article candidates: diamond, turquoise, and Niagra Falls among others.
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
Yes, I was involved in the climate wars, see Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Climate change dispute, this last spring and no doubt was a bit rash at times. I tried to focus on the science and keep the various articles NPOV (others differred on interpretation) and attempted on one occaision to mediate a compromise (unsuccesfully): see the history of solar greenhouse (technical). I have learned from that experience and now feel that when the edits feel stressful, it's time to take a break; come back later and edit with a cool head. Perhaps most importantly, don't feed the trolls. I also had a dispute way back when with my nominator User:Guettarda mostly as a result of my poor attempt at humor, but I think we've moved past that now. -Vsmith 29 June 2005 02:22 (UTC)
