[edit] Bovlb
Final (26/0/1) ended 22:42 25 September 2005 (UTC)
Bovlb (talk • contribs) – Bovlb has been with us since March this last year and has done much good work since then with a good balance of work accross the namespaces, and excellent work regarding the endless copyright problems on WP. The user talk page is full of examples of treating newbies gently and fully explaining actions with regard to copyvios and other matters. If anything could have been phrased better or has been interpreted the wrong way, Bovlb is always prepared to appologise and/or explain in a different way, without necessarily giving up on the necessary persistence. To summarise, Bovlb is a conscientious (sp?) hard-worker with the ability to get things done without putting noses out of joint - absolutely ideal qualities for an administrator to have. - Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here:
- I accept. I note that my first logged in contribution was 2004-03-02. Bovlb 04:06, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
- My appologies for that! I was doing it from memory and obviously didn't pay as much attention to the year as I thought I had. Thryduulf 07:31, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

- en.wiki is so big, lots of editors never cross paths for a long time. I wouldn't have known who Bovlb was if he had not caught me on copyvio way back when. NoSeptember 12:14, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

- Support. Bovlb's conduct in the matter of the ongoing vandalism of magic-secret articles has been exemplary. Bovlb's dilligent and thoughtful work on Talk:Out_of_This_World_(card_trick)#Request_for_comment helped clarify matters and, I think, cooled some heads. In all of this, Bovlb has shown a strong understanding of what should (and should not) be in Wikipedia, of how consensus decisions are made, and of how decent wikipedians deal with one another and with conflict. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 07:37, 19 September 2005 (UTC)

- Support EXTREME LESBIAN SUPPORT finally a candidate who actually wikifies a page instead of just tagging it (for some reason seems to be a minority lately...). Many other good qualities too. Ryan Norton T | @ | C 22:58, 19 September 2005 (UTC)
- Support just because of User:RN's extreme lesbian support comment. I admit to being too lazy to wikify tagged articles myself. — JIP | Talk 15:46, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
- Support I trust everyone above me, including User:NoSeptember. ;)
- Emphatic support . I refuse to state whether I trust any of the editors above me, and base my support on my own observation of Bovlb's diligent copyvio work. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 00:44, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

- Neutral I've never heard of this user. Type O Spud 03:10, 24 September 2005 (UTC)
- That's ok. Wikipedia has many pages. Its possible not to bump into all people due to their varied interests. User:Nichalp/sg 13:29, 25 September 2005 (UTC)
- Indeed, I find that if I haven't seen the editor's name around, it probably means I've been slacking on RC patrol. --Alan Au 05:34, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
Comments
- I'd like to thank everyone for their support, but more so for their kind comments. I've always felt that my contributions here have been "flying under the radar", and it has been very encouraging this last week to see how many people have appreciated my efforts. I will try to do honour to the office. Bovlb 14:31, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:
- 1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
- A. I do a lot of new page patrol, and I've flagged my fair share of CSDs and copyvios (as well as wikifying and expanding more promising new articles). I have also handled several cases of vandalism. Being a sysop would let me do all that more efficiently and without leaving a backlog for others. I also answer a lot of questions at WP:HD, WP:VP, and WP:GC. That doesn't require sysop powers per se, but resolving the underlying problem sometimes does. I run a MediaWiki installation at work, so I ought to be competent with the software.
- 2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
- A. I don't feel that I have yet written my magnum opus here, and I am in awe of some of the more prolific contributors who churn out featured articles. A lot of my contributions to Wikipedia have been to trying pour oil on troubled waters, and make our processes work more smoothly. I'm particularly pleased with this one, which I feel met a particularly glaring gap.
- 3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
- A. Anyone who flags potential copyright violations here will testify that it is a pretty thankless task, and editors can get very disgruntled about seeing their contributions threatened. I try to handle this with courtesy and calm explanation, and I hope I often succeed. Other editors have made me stressed and even angry on occasion. I usually give myself some time to reflect before responding, and this helps a lot. Sometimes I just walk away; after all, if it's the right thing to do, then someone else will do it — time and again I have seen this to be true. I generally stay away from deeply controversial articles, but I did contribute to our coverage of Terri Schiavo. My direct involvement was to ensure that the phrase "her family" was not used inappropriately, but indirectly I started articles on Sun Hudson, Spiro Nikolouzos, Advance Directives Act, and thalamic stimulator.
