Rroland On the basis of his press release, Rroland appears to be a mythological musical figure on a par with The Frosted Ambassador or the long-lost fifth Beatle. If I had to venture a guess, I’d have to say that Rroland is actually British electro-folkie Momus operating under a rather unassuming alias. Identity issues aside, Reflections on a Past Life as Played on the Roland Synthesizer is, as its name implies, a series of fifteen Roland keyboard-based electronic compositions. Sounding not unlike Perrey & Kingsley’s The In Sound From Way Out played over a shitty transistor radio, the bulk of Reflections could certainly soundtrack any Nintendo or Colecovision game you’d care to name. Throughout the album, Rroland (whoever he is) makes great use of his rudimentary composition skills, gingerly guiding the listener through a Technicolored world of hesitant, slightly off-kilter electronic pop. The gleefully bouncy "Frozen Fugue" brings to mind the twisted creations of Wendy/Walter Carlos (one of Momus' favorite people -- Ed.), while the delightful "Shining Chariot" sounds like someone attempting to play the Pac-Man theme song while doing a handstand and eating a Creamsicle. I guess I'll have to wait for the video to see if that's actually the case. I'm still not entirely sure who this Rroland guy is, but his Candyland-on-crack soundscapes are welcome in my home any time.

[edit] Critics, Historians, and Journalists

  • Dave Stelfox, British music critic, journalist and DJ. Specialises in roughneck rap, bashment and deep house with a funky twist. Characterised by a dry humor and endless enthusiasm for the music he loves – and contempt for the music which he considers worthless.
  • House of Tracks - Online music review magazine for new music, created and written by David Apple, Lily Sparks and Shelley Lace. House of Tracks
  • Ryan Schreiber, creator of Pitchfork Media.

Anya Phillips, mainstay of the late '70's New York punk rock scene, contemporary of Iggy Pop, Ramones, Blondie, Bebe Buell, Danny Fields.

Kandis Knight, –Music Journalist, Columnist, Socialite. Kandis Knight graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a degree in Journalism/Marketing. Knight’s love for music has defined her career.

In 1996, Knight began working for The Rae Mackenzie Group, a marketing firm owned by Sharon Smith. Smith was the VP of marketing for Prince and Paisley Park for over a decade. The Paisley Park work ethic definitely rubbed off on Knight, the young aggressive executive. Knight was a part of the three person team that envisioned, planned and implemented the mega event, The Gathering. (www.the-gathering.com). The first year in production the event grossed $450K in corporate sponsorship and was attended by over 50,000 women of color.

In 2001, Knight began writing for The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder, where she interviewed musicians including Grammy Award-winning artists. In 2002, she began writing for a Minneapolis hip-hop a website called Dunation and that opened the doors for her first weekly column, Verb, in The Pulse of The Twin Cities. Also in 2001, Knight launched her company LuCreative Group Marketing. Knight helped launch record labels and handled national marketing campaigns.

In 2004, she began a monthly column called “Kandi-apolis” in The Urban Trendsetter Magazine. InBox Magazine was one of the first Midwest magazines to syndicate “Kandi-apolis”, other magazines and websites soon followed.

In 2006, Knight’s writing debuted in The Source Magazine, (Vol. 201 page 52), Knight also began writing for Grip Magazine. Through industry connections, Knight has secured publicity accounts for some of your favorite artists. In November, Knight launched The ATL Report (syndicated) and continues to freelance for a barrage of different publications. (www.myspace.com/atljournalist).

Knight still finds time to serve on the Atlanta Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce, and she is a judge for Atlanta’s Urban Idol Competition to debut on UPN. In 2007, Knight will begin teaching a Hip-Hop Journalism class along side hip-hop journalism “OG”, Carlton “Big Wade” Wade, Southern Correspondent for The Source Magazine. Wade has also written for Grip Magazine, Ozone, Vibe, XXL.

  • Breakup song
  • CD-BGM
  • Church of Areaology
  • Can't Stand Losing You byt The Police
  • pickup band term seems to refer to a loose collection of muscians, assembled for a single performance. There term seems to have been applied to a number of noteworthy muscians. Belushi [117], Glenn Miller [118], John Coltrane [119], its mentioned a cople of times in wikipedia Nick Lowe, Hated in the Nation, and a few bands have used the term in their name.
  • Creative differences - origins, noteworthy examples, etc.
  • radio symphony - What does "radio symphony" mean, exactly? "A symphony that plays on radio" is NOT funny.
  • comping - There's already a Wikipedia article covering "comping" in the sense used by jazz musicians: supporting a soloist, but there ought to be one describing "comping" in the sense of assembling a vocal[120] (or other solo) track from a collection of different takes because this latter use of the term is probably more common with popular musicians today.
