Republican Movement (Ireland)

The Republican Movement is a collective term used to describe Irish republican organisations.

It is used by both Irish republicans and their opponents. In media pronouncements, Sinn Féin refers to the Republican Movement when implying both Sinn Féin and the Provisional Irish Republican Army.

At republican commemorations, including those held to mark the 1916 Easter Rising, a statement is usually read out from the "Leadership of the Republican Movement". The "Republican Movement" referred to varies depending on the group organising the commemoration (see below).

The organisations that compose (or have once composed) the (Provisional) Republican Movement include:

Republican Sinn Féin, however, claims the "Republican Movement" refers only to:

  • Republican Sinn Féin

  • Cumann na mBan
  • Fianna Éireann (RSF wing)
  • Irish National Freedom Committee

The 32 County Sovereignty Movement, likewise, claims the term "Republican Movement" refers only to:

  • 32 County Sovereignty Movement
  • Real IRA
  • Fianna Éireann (32 CSM wing)
  • Irish Freedom Committee
  • Irish Republican Prisoners' Welfare Association
