Republic of Virtue
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "Republic of Virtue" was a speech given by Maximilien Robespierre on February 5th, 1794. In it, Robespierre provided a comprehensive statement of his political theory while advocating the use of terror in defending democracy, which he equated with virtue.
In his speech, Robespierre advocated many of the ideals expressed in the French Constitution of 1793.
The "Republic of Virtue" was part of the de-Christianization of the French Revolution. The leaders of the new cult renamed the cathedral Notre Dame de Paris to 'The Temple of Reason. '
The new French Revolutionary Calendar was created too (this is where 'Thermidorian Reaction' comes from). Robespierre himself did not believe in this enlightened thought, but he led the public in it.
