Republic of Pemberley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Republic of Pemberley is an online community dedicated to the appreciation of the work of the English author Jane Austen. The site was established shortly after the release of the 1995 BBC adaptation of Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice. The community is managed by a volunteer committee and takes its name from the estate owned by the hero Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Pemberley is an example of the way in which the advent of the internet has helped to transform and renew the experience of reading literature from bygone eras. On the website, Austen's novels are reproduced in their entirety but are annotated with hyperlinks and augmented by discussion boards, allowing readers to readily make connections between various parts of Austen's writings as well as to interact with fellow readers. The Republic of Pemberley has been described as a "salon of the digital age".
