Republic of Benin

Republic of Benin refers to two historical states:

  • the present West African state Benin, formerly the colony Dahomey
  • the short-lived so-called Republic of Benin, in Nigeria's coastal Bight of Benin, called after its capital Benin City. It was from 9 August 1967 as Midwest Region occupied by Biafra, governed by a Biafran Military Administrator (17 August 1967 - 19 September 1967 the soldier Albert Nwazu Okonkwo), till on 19 September 1967 the Republic of Benin was unilaterally declared (07:00; not recognized; the same Albert Nwazu Okonkwo ruled it as Governor), only to be on 20 September 1967 ended as it was militarily reoccupied by Nigerian (13:00).
