Remote Publishing
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Remote Publishing, also referred to as Web to Print (Web2Print) describes the process of creating and / or personalising printable templates via the Internet, whereby a user is empowered to actively participate in the pre-press process using a choice of predefined templates coded to permit text editing, formatting changes, and image replacement using an internet browser.
Pre definition of templates involve labelling specific areas, as web-editable, and making building blocks available which allow the user in a guided fashion to dynamically produce a printed piece based upon particular rules. Elements, including images, and data-driven areas can also allow the user to create a new manuscript.
Editing possibilities range from simple image switching and text editing, to formatting text passages, and manipulating of image size. Depending upon the system used, the user can immediately preview his changes, and download the individualized printed piece as PDF from the server application, or send the PDF on to the print production department. Some systems enable image uploading, or uploading of address lists (i.e.: for mail-merge) Common solutions are server baser PDF applications, or Layout and Graphic software –such as Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress (DDS) which can be remotely controlled by http calls to a server application.
This type of production process is increasing in importance in the areas of database publishing, and variable data publishing applications. Typical usage of the Adobe InDesign Server, and the QuarkDynamicDocumentServer, can be found under Brand management.
