[edit] Overview
The Unit incorporates existing programs and services that focus on targeted intervention and supervision of offenders. The services of the Unit are consistent with a focus on specific programs for offenders that address identified risks and criminogenic needs.
[edit] Home Detention
Home Detention became available as a means of serving a period of remand or a prison sentence (or committal). The home detention provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders (Interim) Act 2001 apply to adults and young persons. Strict eligibility criteria applies and a thorough suitability assessment is undertaken prior to the Court determining whether such an Order will be imposed. Program numbers have fluctuated but as yet the eligibility criteria have not been widened to enable an increase in numbers to achieve full capacity. As a platform for the delivery of rehabilitation programs, home detention has been shown to be effective in reducing reoffending. It has the potential to cost less than half the cost of keeping offenders in prison.
[edit] Reparations Unit
The Reparation's Section (formerly known as the Community Service Order Unit) is responsible for the administration of Community Services Orders. This is a reparative and rehabilitative community based sentencing option.
[edit] Offender Intervention Programs
This Section provides a range offence related educational and therapeutic group work and counselling programs for persons subject to supervision by ACT Corrective Services and for those who are in an ACT custodial setting. The programs consist of, Sex Offender Programs, Family Violence Programs, Cognitive Behaviour Skill Programs and Alcohol & other Drug Educational Programs
[edit] Intensive Intervention Program
This Section provides intensive supervision to high-risk burglary offenders. It is part of the Reducing Property Crime Program. It is a fresh approach to tackling high-volume, recidivist property offenders that will effect a reduction in the overall rates of property crime in the ACT. The initiative is evidence-based and has been designed in response to recent ACT research and experience in property crime. The program will address property offending through the provision of intensive responses to 20 recidivist and high-risk property offenders at a time. It has, however, recently come under severe pressure from proposed budget cuts in the 2005 ACT Budget.
