Registry Mechanic, developed by PC Tools is a popular proprietry system utility for Windows. The software attempts to compact and fix the registry. Such software is controversial among experts and enthusiasts alike as some claim these tools are a necessity while others claim they do more harm than good. Some users suggest using a combination of registry "cleaners", the rule of thumb being that no one tool can find or fix all discrepancies in the registry, while others may recommend a product based solely on the combination of so-called errors it finds in one scan, rather than realistically analyzing the severity of the "problems" found. Users are advised to read all Help files before making any changes, and to prevent the possibility of damaging the registry.
The free trial version of the product is available but it is feature limited and asks the user to purchase the full product in order to continue its use. It is restricted so that it can only delete 16 registry entries. Compacting the registry is only possible with the registered version.
