The current acronym (R.I.NA.) comes originally from "Registro Italiano Navale ed Aeronautico" ("Italian Registrer of Ships and Aircrafts"), and had been then changed after partition of aeronautics registry in a separate entity. History
== Activities == RINA is a charity, maily operating in the classification of ship. The "class certificate" is the document confirming that a ship has been designed and built according to rules and regulations set by the Classification Society itself, and is therefore authorised to carry out the activity it had been designed for. In order to keep the class status, the ship is subject to periodical inspections (usually on a yearly basis) and to deeper checks and tests every five years. Such inspections bemore more strict with the aging of the ships. Le classification of ships is essential for the structural and technical deslign, for the operation of ships, and affects the shipbuilding process, the manteinance and repairing, the freights, insurance brokerage and banking in the shipping business. Lack of compliance with the rules and regulations, or non-compliance with reccomendations after an inspectiion for the classification, may cause the suspension or withdraw of class certificate. Most common authorisations conncected to the classification of ships are related to International agreements such as the Agreement on Load Line, SOLAS, MARPOL and Tonnage. Such agreements include mandatory codes concerning transportation of hazardous goods (e.g. International codes on gas and chemicals transportation and subsequent procedures for a "safe management"). Most of insurance policies in the shipping transportation industry include a "classification clause" stating that cargoes being shipped on IACS classified ships will be insured according to tariffs agreed in the policy (where IACS, International Association of Classification Societies, is the association of most important and reputable Class Societies). IACS members carry out institutional activity on behalf of the Governments members of International Maritime Organization (IMO). More than 100 Countries delegate such authority to IACS members.
Management
The top management of the Charity is appointed by various entities of the shipping sector, i.e. Italian Ministry of Transportation, associations of Shipowners, association of Shipyards, association of Shipping insurers.
