Regina Richards

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Regina Richards, who uses the stage name Regina, is a dance music singer born in Brooklyn New York. She is best known for her hit "Baby Love", which hit #10 on the Hot 100 in 1986.

At the time of the song's release, many people thought it was performed by another singer whose profile was on the rise from releasing dance/pop hits: Madonna. In fact, Regina co-wrote "Baby Love" with frequent Madonna collaborater Stephen Bray, and it was submitted to Madonna, who declined to record it - leaving it Regina and Bray to record themselves. Regina did, in fact, begin her recording career before Madonna's began, releasing an album with Regina & the Red Hots on A&M (followed by a solo single, "Deep Dreaming").

"Baby Love" was taken from Regina's Curiosity album (atlantic), which also included "Say Goodbye," a song she'd initially written for Kenny Rogers. Regina remains a one hit wonder on the Hot 100, but in addition to the #1 placing of "Baby Love", she had three other songs hit the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. There was a second Regina album in the works called Best Kept Secret, but it never reached the public.

She is not to be confused with another artist named Regina (from Brazil), who charted with "Day By Day," which peaked at #11 in 1997.

Regina graduated from Marymount Manhattan College in 1979 with a degree in theatre.

Regina Richards first single was released in the UK by A&M records. The A side was "Tyger," which was released in 1980.
