[edit] Star Ratings and Album Certifications
G'day, I'd like to create a diamond/platinum/gold RIAA certification template, much like the Star Rating templates you created. I can't quite figure out how it would be best to do this, so I was hoping to make this a collaborative effort.
I'm thinking that the template could be like this:
{{riaacert|diamond|{{{1}}}|platinum|{{{2}}}|gold|{{{3}}}|silver|{{{4}}}}} or {{riaacert |diamond|{{{1}}} |platinum|{{{2}}} |gold|{{{3}}} |silver|{{{4}}} }}
I just don't know whether the image should appear like this: 3x or
If it's the first, then it's easy. If we go with the second, I was wondering if you knew a way to prgram (because I sure dont) it to make the record appear 3 times?
Plus, i've just put some (dodgy looking... I know) pictures in there to fill the gap for the moment.
What do you think?
Do you know how this would be made using WikiMedia?
Just note my page if you're interested in helping out.
Ta.

- I would be delighted to help. But first I have a few questions. By making it in MediaWiki, do you mean using SVG? Or do you mean using the correct syntax (the one you have might not work, I think)? Either way I could probably help. If you want to make a draft to go over ideas, you can make a subpage of my username, or yours. And about making the image appear multiple times - yes it is absolutely possible (using
{{#if:
), but yes it is messy. It is messy or more specifically tedious, to code the template like that (it would be easy to embed it still). It would be worth it for the fact that it looks better but it would be impossible to give it a limitless cap (i.e. there would have to be a max number of times) - Рэдхот(t • c • e) 12:51, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

- Hey,
- I'm glad you'd like to join me on this. As far as the limitation goes, I think that would only apply if people start selling more than 100 million copies of albums. Because once something has 9x platinum, the next level is diamond. And I'm both pretty certain nobody's ever sold more than 100 million copies of a single album, so we don't have toworry about that. Worst case scenario, I can foresee, is people putting all four variables (silver, gold, platinum AND diamond) but generall, I think people don't really say "Your album went diamond and 4 platinum", however are more likely to say "You have a diamond album" even though 14 million album sales are much more successful than 10 million.
- Perhaps with that foresight, maybe it'd be a better idea having 4 identical templates, except different for each of the different certifications. So {{diamondcert}} {{platcert}}/{{platinumcert}} {{goldcert}} {{silvercert}} instead of a single riaa cert thing might be a better idea.
- Again, as to how it should be programmed, I'm not really sure, but to simply allow a numeric selection to multiply the amount is something I think would be great, so that {{platcert|3}} would yeild (except with better images, of course).
- So, to reiterate:
- 1 - 9 as the amount to select
- 4 different types (but simply identical except for the name and the image it places)

- About the tedium of creating the page, usually if I don't know how to do something, I just go to where it's been done before, but for somthing like this,, I can't think of where it has been, so that's why I asked for help. I am sorry if it's going to be a bit rough getting it happening. I'm glad to help with what I can do, which (unfortunately) isn't very much, but I'm happy to create the images (the ones I've put up there are just ones my mate did at work... with mspaint. So I'll photoshop up some sleek looking record logos and move on from there.

- A single template would be best. But also, unless you make the images in SVG, they will get recreated very soon. If you want, you could make some in raster and I can try to convert them as accurately as possible to SVG. In case you don't have a clue what I mean, see raster and vector. Also, I think the template will have to be usable for more than just RIAA. Only RIAA wouldn't be neutral. - Рэдхот(t • c • e) 12:36, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

- Hey,
- Yeah, I'm familiar with vector vs raster (I worked for 5 years as a graphic designer). I'll whip up something using freehand. I just haven't been operating from my pc at home, and my machine at work (I'm not kidding) doesn't even have Paint, let alone anything else that I can draw a simple image in.
- I was just thinking, is it possible to have the images layer over the top of one another? if so, I have something in mind that would look nice. Just to have the records/cds cascade across one another. Not much to the concept, but if there's too much work in practice, I think i'd have to let that idea go.
- As to one single template, that's fine with me. You mentioned a valid point that it shouldn't be solely centred around RIAA. Otherwise, I don't know really what to call the template (though, this is simply a cosmetic and speculative part only). like {{sales}}? That might work, unless it's already taken.
- Anyway, I'll get to work on those images.

- Well {{certification}} and {{cert}} are available. If you want you could also try doing the vectors yourself in Inkscape, but I'm happy to make them if you want. And yes, it is possible to layer them with partial transparency if you want. - Рэдхот(t • c • e) 12:51, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
- Oh, also {{sales}} is available but I'm afraid the name might be a bit too vague. - Рэдхот(t • c • e) 12:53, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

- You may have noticed that I took the sales template. I just figure it's easy and can't really be mistaken as far as spelling goes. If someone, sometime requests for that to be used for something else, then they can figure out then where to move this to. In the meantime, I think it's nice and simple this way.
- Anyway, right now I've finished the image for the record (it's slightly convoluted, just in the way that I've designed it, but you'll see what I mean when it's converted. I'm just getting an SVG converted now to attach to my Flash, since my Freehand's not working for some reason).
- Hopefully you like it, and more importantly, it's recognisably a record (or an indication of the sales).

- Ok. I have a draft available at User:RedHotHeat/certtest. It works as
{{User:RedHotHeat/certtest|TYPE|# OF TIMES}}
. It currently only does gold and platinum (no images, but it shows a link where the images would be, allowing to use as proof of concept). Gold only allows up to 2×, right now, and platinum only goes up to 4× and uses seperate images. But btw, these limits may have increased by the time you read this. Also, before you upload the images, could you run the names you're gonna use by me? (The reason is, depending on how they're named, it makes the coding easier or harder). - Рэдхот(t • c • e) 15:36, 23 November 2006 (UTC)- And if you could give me a sneak peak of the images by e-mail, before you upload them, that would be great (use <REMOVED> - ignoring all accents, and delete after use) Thanks. I've also moved the talk the talk about this, from my talk page, to User talk:RedHotHeat/certtest. - Рэдхот(t • c • e) 15:42, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
