Redwood River
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Redwood River watershed is one of 13 major watersheds feeding the Minnesota River. The watershed consists of 703 square miles (1821 square kilometers). The river is located in southwestern Minnesota. Its source is in Pipestone County. It flows 80 miles (129 km) north and east though the cities of Marshall and Redwood Falls, where Redwood Lake, a reservoir is located 2 miles (3.2 km) from the spot where the river empties into the Minnesota River. The name of the river is a translation of the Lakota name "Chanshyapi" ("chan" meaning wood, "sha" meaning red, and "ayapi" meaning "are on"). The name refers to the "redwood" (Eastern Juniper) trees that grow along the river’s banks.
