Red zone

The red zone can refer to:

• The red states collectively; that is to say, those states of the United States that tend to vote for the Republican Party in elections, particularly elections for President; or

• That portion of an American football field inside the defensive team's 20-yard line; detailed statistics are kept on how each team performs - on both offense and defense - during possessions that extend into this zone. The term "red zone" as it pertains to American Football was invented by Dave Plati, the Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director at the University of Colorado.

• In the AMD64 ABI, a part of the stack that should be unused according to the stack pointer, but that the current subroutine may regardless use for temporary values, as long as it doesn't call any other subroutines. If signal or interrupt handlers use the same stack as the interrupted program, they must move the stack pointer past the red zone to avoid overwriting it.
