Red eye (drink)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about a non-alcoholic coffee beverage. For other uses, see Red eye.

A red eye is a cup of coffee with one shot of espresso in it. Variations of the red eye include the black eye, which is made with two shots of espresso and the dead eye which is made with three shots of espresso. Taste varies widely. Some coffee drinkers see coffee/espresso drinks as overkill, while others find them refreshing and smooth.

The red eye has many monikers, depending on the region. In the midwest, a red eye is known as a depth charge. In parts of the South, the drink is called a shot in the dark. It also has countless unique names coined by individual coffeeshops, particularly in areas where coffee jargon is less well-known.

While they both contain espresso, a red eye should not be confused with an americano, which is made with hot water rather than drip coffee. The red eye shares the americano's powdery, intense espresso taste, but with the added taste of the coffee, and much more caffeine.
