rec.music.phish (often called simply "RMP") is a Usenet newsgroup originated for the discussion of the band Phish. It was begun on March 3, 1992 by net-savvy Phish fans who already had been using the Internet for coordinated discussion about the band. Phish were the fourth rock band to have an Internet newsgroup, preceded only by The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead. Over the years, conversation has been variably more or less on-topic, although an objective view of RMP's content does see a slow general trend away from discussion of the band Phish and related topics. Whether or not all posts contain Phish-related content, RMP is an active newsgroup: Google Groups' archives show activity of up to 29,000 posts per month at its peak (August 2004), and Microsoft NetScan reports that RMP is generally the most active non-binaries music newsgroup in Usenet.
