Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike is a Star Wars video game developed by Factor 5 and published by LucasArts for the Nintendo GameCube. The game deals with the Rebel Alliance unit, Rogue Squadron, who, under the command of Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles, use starfighters to engage and defeat the Galactic Empire. The game is set during episodes A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi and recreates the battles that take place during those films, notably the Battle of Hoth. Like its GameCube predecessor, it also features a "making-of" documentary.

Rebel Strike was developed as a sequel to the earlier games, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader. It added to the game the ability for the player to depart their starfighter and join in on a land battle as well as enter into land vehicles such as an Imperial AT-AT and AT-ST during certain missions. The game also has a multiplayer mode where two players can play all but two of the missions from Rogue Leader co-operatively.

Contents

[edit] Levels

  • Tatooine Training -- basic training mission on ground, air, speeder and AT-ST
  • Revenge of the Empire -- After the Death Star is destroyed, the empire launches an attack on Yavin 4. First you have to kill several landing craft, then rescue General Dodonna from inside the temple.
  • Defiance on Dantooine -- Using a speeder bike and on the ground, rescue an Imperial defector who has been captured.
  • Defenders of Ralltiir -- Using a T-16 Airspeeder, protect a group of scientists from the Empire.
  • Extraction from Ralltiir -- Rescue the scientists in an AT-ST, then clear the Blockade Runner from Stormtroopers
  • Battlefield Hoth -- You take the place of Luke Skywalker on the ground in the Battle of Hoth after his snowspeeder crashes. Destroy 2 AT-ATs, then ride a tauntaun to the transports, then protect the transports from TIE fighters
  • Trials of a Jedi -- On Dagobah, Yoda teaches you the ways of the Force.
  • Sarlacc Pit -- Use your Jedi skills to escape from the Sarlacc pit.
  • Raid at Bakura -- as Wedge Antilles, you must clear out a space station (similar to the Skyhook in Shadows of the Empire) by protecting several transports. By getting a silver rating for the mission, Wedge is forced to go to the surface of Bakura to save Hobby, a wingmate, in a TIE bomber.
  • Relics of Geonosis -- After the prisoners from the previous mission are kidnapped, travel to Geonosis and track down your foe. You start in the air, but then land on the planet's surface, where you find a LAAT/i, Battle Droids and a Jedi Starfighter.
  • Deception at Destrillion -- Travel through a tunnel to find a secret base. There is, in fact, no base at all -- the base is on the planet surface. Using a Y-Wing, head to the surface and disable a superlaser weapon that is destroying your capital ships.
  • Guns of Dubrillion -- Destroy the superlaser from the previous mission, first in an AT-ST, then in an AT-AT.
  • Fondor Shipyard Assault -- Destroy a Super Star Destroyer in a stolen TIE hunter.
  • Speeder Bike Pursuit -- Ride a Speeder Bike through the forests of Endor, destroying scout troopers along the way.
  • Triumph of the Rebellion -- First, command an AT-ST which Chewbacca stole to open the doors to the deflector shield. Then, as Han Solo, destroy the shield.

[edit] Story

After several minor skirmishes between Rogue Squadron and the Empire — including a minor situation on Dantooine — the first major battle of the game begins on the planet of Ralltiir. The Empire received word that scientists affiliated with the Rebel Alliance hiding on the planet Ralltiir. An invasion force of AT-AT walkers was deployed while 2 Star Destroyers commenced orbital bombardment of the capital city.

Rogue Squadron members Wedge Antilles, and Lt. Sarkli, under the command of Luke Skywalker, were sent to defend the city with 3 airspeeders. Using the same towcable technique that would later be used in the Battle of Hoth, they defeated all the walkers and transports attacking the shield around the city before it was breached.

They then landed in the city itself, to escort the scientists to safety and defeat the Imperial troops. Commander Skywalker commandeered an AT-ST walker and blasted his way to a waiting Corellian Blockade Runner under the command of Lt. Derlin. He and the scientists boarded it, and Skywalker and a team of Rebel troopers beat off the last of the Imperial force who attempted the board the transport. The scientists were escorted offworld to the Rebel base on Hoth.

After the Battle of Hoth and several other skirmishes — including several tasks on the planets of Bakura and Geonosis — Rogue Squadron was sent to the world of Destrillion in the search of Tibanna gas. However, Destrillion was a trap, which allowed the Galactic Empire lured the Rebel fleet to Dubrillion, where in actuality a super laser facility was located. They fired upon the Rebel fleet and the battle began.

Antilles led an assault to destroy the radar dishes, which the Rebels assumed were responsible for the lasers accuracy. Though succeeding in destroying the dishes, the Rebels discovered that the laser was accurate even without them. A new means of disabling the laser was found.

Wedge hijacked an Imperial AT-ST and slaughtered Imperial ground forces while making his way into the heart of the facility. He then commandeered a vacant AT-AT and managed to destroy the power turbines powering the laser. The laser and the facility were then destroyed.

After stealing three TIE Hunters, Antilles and two other Rogues were sent to the Fondor shipyards, which constructed Imperial Star Destroyers. Disguised as Imperials, a "captured" Rebel transport would head on a collision course into the control center, allowing Wedge to disable the facility's shields. The station's commander uncovered the Rebel plot after realizing there was no captured transport scheduled for delivery, and that a scan revealed no life signs aboard the transport.

In the ensuing battle, the transport still managed to destroy the control center and Wedge brought down the shields. The Rebel fleet then arrived from hyperspace and engaged the Imperial forces, with a few squadrons charged with destruction of the facility.

To destroy the facility, the Rebel forces had to destroy the cloaking devices which powered the facility. Wedge succeeded, the facility was destroyed, and "showed that they are overconfident about the upcoming battle," as Emperor Palpatine said.

[edit] Character Weapons

The following are the weapons used on-foot in Rebel Strike.

  • Blaster Pistol- a standard-issue rebel's blaster pistol. It has unlimited ammunition, but needs recharging if used too rapidly.
  • Stormtrooper Rifle- A Stormtrooper's Blaster Rifle which you can pick up from their dead bodies. It has limited ammunition.
  • Thermal Detonators- Supplied to you in some missions, but you're only given three. Useful for dealing with large groups of enemies.
  • E-Web Blaster- A mounted blaster which you can man in certain missions.
  • Lightsaber- Used only by Luke in a few of his missions. A good close-combat blade, which can also be used to deflect gunfire. Also used to open the belly of an AT-AT.

[edit] Co-operative

In Star Wars Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, there is a mode in which two players can play a co-operative version of Rogue Leader. This mode, however, uses the Rebel Strike engine, so a few features have been changed. For example, the A-Wing's concussion missiles now have an auto lock-on feature. There are several problems with the co-op version, however. The three most classic examples are:

[edit] Criticism

Among most reviews, the general consensus was that the on-foot missions were vastly inferior in quality to the vehicle missions. The control interface which disallowed manual aiming in favor of autoaiming basically reduced all shootouts into a contest to mash the A button as rapidly as possible; most reviews were above-average, noting that the rest of the missions and the cooperative and counter-operative modes saved the game from lower scores.

Among fans, the game is more mixed; in general people despise the on-ground missions yet while some people enjoy the multiplayer, others complain about the unconfigurable controls and 2-player limit. Also, some people consider the single-player map "Relics of Geonosis" a case in kitchen-sink philosophy, in which Imperial Stormtroopers, relic Battle Droids, Rebel Starcraft, a Jedi Starfighter, and a Republic Gunship all appear on the same level, and many found the fact that the Starfighter and Gunship were still intact to be unrealistic.
