[edit] Cincinnati

Your photo is outstanding. One of the best cityscapes at Wikipedia. Can you id in the caption the tallest tower? Were you standing in [[Covington, Kentucky[[? That would be more precise.--Wetman 22:47, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Very nice photo of the Gateway Arch. -- Decumanus 23:31, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

American Museum of Natural History Ouch. I certainly didn't do anything to remove the photo. I added a reference to it in the text that's all. You must have fixed it, though, because it looks okay to me now. Sorry to give anxious moments, especially over my favorite local landmark! Wetman 06:55, 11 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Sorry - I was asleep. I've changed the tag - I didn't notice that you were the author. For a list of tags look at Wikipedia:Image Tag Team. Sorry again. Secretlondon 13:04, Feb 24, 2004 (UTC)

Rdikeman -- I'm loving the pictures you're adding of the sportsmen. Great shot of Super Mario, particularly... GWO

I'm adding a draft of the Speedway table to Indianapolis Motor Speedway; since that page seems mostly your baby, and since that page is the most developed speedway page, I wanted your input on how well it works. What changes should be made, or should it be nixed altogether? --Golbez 17:46, 23 May 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the feedback. :) Now a logistical question... please look at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Now, I'm starting to think, maybe we shouldn't list the races in the table. Races can come and go on a regular basis, and not only that, not all are major enough to be listed, and that's a difficult line to draw. Also, perhaps only static stats should be in the table, like physical dimensions. Or, maybe just the most important races (Nextel Cup, IRL and Formula One come to mind). What do you think? Also, any suggestions for more info to put in the table? Ownership (major when dealing with NASCAR, since about a dozen speedways are owned by two companies), seating capacity, etc? --Golbez 04:26, 24 May 2004 (UTC)
Well, I'd still list all the races in the body, so no information would be lost. I just wanted to keep the table for the most pertinent info. OK, I'll list the major races (again, Nextel, IRL and F1, maybe Busch and Craftsman) and put a full list of races in the body as necessary. Indy is easy - there's only three races there, I think. But Lowe's and California and Daytona become more difficult. I'll figure it out. :) --Golbez 18:20, 24 May 2004 (UTC)

Hi! I just started to wonder more about Image:Olympic_flame.jpg. Do you know where it was taken, the date, and perhaps the name of the torchbearer? Those would be helpful on the image description page. Thanks! -- ke4roh 03:12, Jul 5, 2004 (UTC)

Hi Rick,

After seeing your Ralf Schumacher shot on Formula One) I've just been looking over some of your photos - good job! -- Solipsist 07:58, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

And I might as well nominate Image:Baseball pitching motion 2004.jpg whilst I'm at it. I'm not much of a sports fan, but I'm still impressed to see your portfolio. -- Solipsist 19:45, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] photos from around the world?

Hello there. :) Press Corps has been slow recently, but we *did* get some decent footage of the political conventions this past month. Do you have any print-quality images from around the world? We are planning a newsletter and trying to include a nice diversity of photographs. +sj+ 00:06, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hey there Rick, I would like to give you this barnstar. I think you do an excellent job on Wikipedia, obviously not merely with your sports photography, but as Sports seems to be "your thing" I award you for that specifically. Cheers, Solitude\talk 12:38, Nov 29, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

[edit] Unverified images

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following images:

We noticed they currently don't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Peter O. (Talk, automation script) 03:26, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

[edit] Use of your photos under another license?

Hi. Please excuse my possibly deficient English, this is not my mother tongue. I am part of a forum community that has launched some weeks ago a french-speaking (multilingual if volunteers ask) wiki-based encyclopedia dealing with Motor-racing and Formula 1, named WikiF1. The content is under Creative Commons by-nc-sa (Personally, I was pushing for the choice of the GFDL --in order to have our content integrated more easily in the french Wikipedia, that is deficient about motor-racing, to be a real help for it-- but the community vote has chosen this license --less free than the GFDL or the CC by-sa, with this "nc" clause-- that will complicate the exchange.

Would you accept your photos to be redistributed under the Creative Commons by-nc-sa? If it is not your will, we probably use them under the GNU FDL licence, tagging it clearly with it, but licensing will be confusing for the readers I think.

Thank you very much by advance, for your consideration. --Mayfoev 14:36, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Pic of the Day

Hi Rick,

Just to let you know that your photo Image:Baseball pitching motion 2004.jpg is up for reuse as Pic of the Day today. I've reused the same caption as last time, but you can make any changes at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/March 17, 2005. Sorry for the late notice, but I've been struggling against the database being frequently locked over the last couple of days. -- Solipsist 08:51, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Basketball.jpg

Hey there. Image:Basketball.jpg is a great picture. Can you fill in some of the details about it? [edit] panning

I just added your common-Image:M schumacher2.jpg picture of Michael Schumacher to the german article de:Mitziehen (panning). I guess you took this picture yourself, perhaps with a digital camera where exif data is saved with the image. I'd be curious (just for the panning-article) what the shutter speed was.
I try to check back this discussion; I you can't reply soon, please contact me at de:Benutzer Diskussion:Thire,

PS: I like Image:Williams f1.jpg very much. Why isn't it on Wikimedia Commons?

Sorry for the delay in replying; my computer's power supply went out last week and I just got a new one yesterday. Anyway, I found the data for the image you inquired about and added the shutter speed (1/160th) to the de:Mitziehen article caption.

[edit] Image:Alonso usgp 2004 pits.jpg

Hey, want to change this to GFDL-self or make it more clear that you are the author (assuming you are Rick Dikeman). It would make it easier and avoid the confusion of them getting marked for deletion according to the new no source policies. gren グレン 01:54, 26 September 2005 (UTC)

I was not familiar with that variation of GFDL; it is appropriate in this case, and I have made the change. Thanks!

[edit] Baseball on Wikicities

Hello Rdikeman, Googie Man here and I'm writing to you because I'm very familiar with your pictures of baseball players on Wikipedia. Jimbo and Angela have made a new webstie called Wikicities. This link in particular will take you to the baseball Wikicity. As you'll see it's similar to Wikipedia, but my hope is this will allow baseball fans to do more and different things, like reporting on games, in depth statistics, create mulitple pages for pictures, and whatever else baseball fans care to create. You've done great work on Wikipedia and I was hoping you could help get this baseball Wikicity off the ground. Please let me know what you think either at my talk page, or you can email me at terry@wikia.com. Thanks! Googie Man(Talk), 22:37, 4 January 2006 (UTC)

I've reused the same caption as last time, but you can make any changes at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/February 1, 2006. -- Solipsist 19:50, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

... and Image:Webber usgp 2004.jpg is due up again tomorrow. I've changed the caption to be more relevant to Mark Webber as this photo no longer appears on Formula 1, but you can make any changes at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/February 13, 2006. -- Solipsist 23:22, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi, this image was missing its licensing information. Since it appears you are the photographer, I've tagged it with GFDL-presumed. You should go and update this to either GFDL-self or another compatible license (for example ). Thanks, BrownCow • (how now?) 17:24, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request

Hi Rdikeman,

My name is Fernanda Viégas and I have been studying Wikipedia for a while now (you can see a paper I published on the subject here). I would like to ask you a few questions about your activities as a Wikipedia "photographer" and "illustrator." I am fascinated by the pictorial side of Wikipedia and it would be great to hear about this community from one of its members. Would you be available for an email interview? Thanks, Fernanda.

[edit] CC-BY-SA

My dear and fellow Cincinnatian (I'm assuming);

I'm working on Wikitravel and was wondering if there would be any way you would make your photo of Cincinnati from N. KY. available under dual licenses GFDL and CC-BY-SA so we at Wikitravel could use your image on our article regarding Cincinnati [1]. Thanks. 71.72.212.152 21:56, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm happy to share it anyway you like; what do I need to do for you?
Rdikeman 23:43, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Apologies for not responding any sooner. If you want you can upload it here [2], however, you will have to create a user name. I normally check new additions every couple of days and will added it to the Cincinnati article. Or if you would like you can just add the CC-SA or CC-BY-SA disclaimer (I'm not sure how Wikipedia does it but on Wikitravel you can do this by writing Dual . For the legal jargon on Creative Commons please visit [3] Otherwise I'm certain it would suffice if you wrote "I release this image under GFDL and CC-BY-SA" on the image's page and that would give Wikitravel enough permission to use it. Would you like us to link back to your Wikipedia user page to give you credit or should we use a real name? Thanks! 71.72.212.152 09:09, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
I've added the CC-SA tag to the image. Use it in good health. ;-)

[edit] Gramophone record

Just out of curiosity, did you "fuzz out" the album cover on this photo? I liked it that way, although some didn't; it has been un-fuzzed by somebody, and I can't figure out how to put it back. - DavidWBrooks 12:40, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

I did -- in response to requests for "fair use rationale" for the image. I have decided to let others decide which version is more appropriate and acceptable. :-\ Rdikeman 12:48, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Webber usgp 2004.jpg

Hi,

Is there any chance you can upload a higher resolution and higher quality version of your image of Mark Webber ?

I think it is a great photo, and I would like it to stay as a featured image, but by today’s featured image qualifications the resolution is too low, and it is too compressed. --Windsok 10:57, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Sure. The "original" is a 3072 x 2048 18Mb TIFF. What resolution/file size is appropriate?
Rdikeman 12:31, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
I am a believer that images should be uploaded in as high resolution as possible, so the full resolution would be great, I assume you have photoshop, so highish quality jpeg compression of it would be great. Thanks! --Windsok 13:51, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Happy to oblige. It is now a 3072 x 1750 1.1 Mb JPEG. BTW, that Mark Webber article is quite a piece of work! Take care.
Rdikeman 16:49, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks alot mate. The Mark Webber article was rewritten by User:Albinomonkey, not me :) --Windsok 05:22, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Photos?

Hey! I was just wondering how you are able to upload pictures on the wiki articles. I know that we need to prove copyright, but how does one do that? Any insight you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! Bleach Babe 22:54, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

To upload a photo, click the "Upload file" link on the left side of any page (maybe you knew that already). As far as copyright, I'm not a very good resource for understanding all the issues involved. Almost every picture I have uploaded was taken by me, so I just select "GFDL (self made)" as the Licensing type on the "Upload file" page.
The Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags page lists the options available to you.

[edit] Academic Freedom

Hi Rdikeman. I am writing a page of Academic Freedom in Wikipedia Spanish and I have used some of your text. While traducing the section of Academic Freedom of Professors, I think I found that the citations (ref) do not correspond to the text. Please, could you check them? PR 15:23, 25 July 2006 (UTC)This is my nikename. My real name is Tasc, but it is already used by someone else in w:en. [edit] Template:F1 race report infobox

Since you seem to be the only other one actually using this template, I figured I'd ask you specifically, in addition to asking the wikiproject.

What do you think about combining the Template:F1 race report infobox with Template:F1 race report? Two of the info variables are already used in the infobox, and the remaining 4 could be copied straight from the F1 race report box at the bottom of said pages. The main reason I suggest, is that I saw a similar design at this page, and I though it looked nice. A design for my proposal is available at my sandbox. The two changes made: addition/merging of two templates, and widening of the template by 2 em. (The template was not originally designed with flagicons in mind, as such, longer names wrapped, causing the infobox to lengthen.) Let me know what y'all think. -slowpokeiv 15:26, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyright Questions

I noticed your name under some baseball card images and wondered if you could help me understand the copyright issue of adding images to articles. I wrote an article about my father Hap Moran and would like to add an image, but the photo I have in mind was obviously a PR photo taken by the New York Giants (football) but I seem to have the only copy and there are no credits on the back. In fact, when the book New York Giants 75 years was published, I was paid for the use of the photo (from 1930) and it was credited "Moran family collection." Also, I'd be interested in writing an article about the Diamond Matchbooks with football players on them from 1933 - 1938 - there is no copywrite on the covers, so being that old aren't they now in the public domain? I have a number of them on my website. I'm just not sure how these items fit into the categories I've read about image use on Wikipedia. Thanks. Revmoran 20:18, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Revmoran, I am far from an expert on copyright issues; almost all of the images I upload are my own. I consider the baseball card images to be an example of Fair use, though I took the pictures of the cards. In the case of your photo of your father, it seems the Giants now consider you the copyright holder. That's a pretty strong case, as far as I can tell. It seems to me you could upload it with the Licensing option, "The copyright holder gave me permission to use this work in Wikipedia articles."
