I've quit Wikipedia. You can read clear expositions of the reasons at the page for User:172 and at Larry Sanger's article, Why Wikipedia Must Jettison Its Anti-Elitism, at Kuro5hin.
From the first: ...a total disregard for expertise in this community; whether or not you are taken seriously depends not on the merit of your work but rather how many friends you have made with the users who dominate the mailing list, IRC, and the administrative pages. Instead, we have a dispute resolution process fetishizing increasingly rigid (and idiosyncratic) community norms and customs without reference to who's writing encyclopedic material and who's not. As a result, far too much power and status is given to people who are frankly nothing more than trolls, as long as they're good at gaming the system.
From the second: There is a certain mindset ... that infects the collectively-managed Wikipedia project: if you react strongly to trolling, that reflects poorly on you, not (necessarily) on the troll. If you attempt to take trolls to task or demand that something be done about constant disruption by trollish behavior, the other listmembers will cry "censorship," attack you, and even come to the defense of the troll. This drama has played out thousands of times over the years on unmoderated Internet groups, and since about the fall of 2001 on the unmoderated Wikipedia.
Apologies from those concerned are not accepted (I have zero faith in their sincerity) nor will I give any for any comments I made. RayGirvan 19:15, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
